    Please, Need immediate help - Yamaha R15.

    I own a 2011 yamaha r15 v1 . the bike has done 5200km and i have just loved every km. However for the past some time the bike is not performing at its full potential and this really concerns me.
    I am having two problems with my bike:

    1) The chain on my bike keeps getting loose too frequently. First it used to get loose within 200km of riding but now it would be loose within 30km. Just 4 days ago i took my bike to the SC, had the chain lubed and tightened, however it was loose again within one day (the chain touches the Swingarm). yesterday I took my bike back to the SC and the mechanic had a look at it. the mechanic rather unconvincingly concluded that the chain had bends in it and has to be replaced ( costs 2.6k) . I am not saying that the mechanic is duping me but I am not sure if they are properly qualified. Anyway, I have no other option since this workshop is the only yamaha SC within 300km.
    I do ride the ride the bike pretty hard and at the limit but I have got it serviced regularly. Should the bike chain give up just within 5200km?

    2) The bike just does not feel smooth and the exhaust sounds a bit harsh. Even when the bike chain is tight, it only revs upto 9000 rpm in 5th gear , which limits the top speed to 117km/hr while the bike used to hit 130km/hr.

    With the little knowledge I have about engines, I think this is happening due to a loss of compression in the engine due to a change in valve clearance. Maybe the exhaust valve is too tight and as a result there is not enough compression and a loss of power at the top end. i am concerned that this may result in a damaged exhaust cam and the cylinder head might have to be replaced!


    I have already conveyed my concerns to the SC but I am not sure if they are taking it seriously. I have been told to bring my bike Monday to get the chain replaced. Should I do it?


    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Advice is a form of nostalgia.
    Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      5700KMs and you been riding it hard? Sounds like a not so ideal running in issue.

      Clean and Lube the chain every 500-700 KMs,

      Do a speed run with the cleaned and lubed chain and report back.
      Also do check if your airfilter is clean enough and if your engine oil is fit for use

        thanks for replying.

        As I have said in the post i had the "bike serviced ". The chain loosened again within 30km and even when the chain was tight the bike could only go to 9k in 5th. Every thing is clean.

        I have driven the the bike as instructed during the runin period... anyway i could not rip the bike for 2-3 months as I was still learning how to ride a bike!

          I would like to ask a few questions.

          1.How old is the oil you are running, was it replaced in last service ?
          2. Was air filter cleaned last service ?
          2.How much life is left in the sprocket ?
          3.When you give throttle, you feel the revs climbing up but speed not increasing ? If yes- clutch-plate worn out.

          Roughness - it can be cause of the air filter being clogged, or something obstructing air flow and a crappy engine oil. Get these both checked out.

          RPM issue - First again check air filter / chain being too loose can be a problem or a worn out clutch plate,part of the reason i'm mentioning clutch plate is because you mentioned you
          were learning to ride when you started with this bike,so chances are you relied too much of clutch using, or it could be a defective clutch plate.

            Big chain problem..
            Get it tightened when the chain is hot i.e just after a ride. Has it started touching minus on the Celsius scale over there?

              2. Was air filter cleaned last service ? Yes.
              2.How much life is left in the sprocket ? Got the front sprocket changed 2 days ago .
              3.When you give throttle, you feel the revs climbing up but speed not increasing ? If yes- clutch-plate worn out.No. Neither the revs rise above 9000 in 5th nor speed increases...No clutch issues.

                Well, that's strange, mostly it's the clutch plates that's damaged when these symptoms are present.
                Get the bike checked at another SVC and see what they have to say, meanwhile, just try correcting the air pressure of the tire and check again. Low air pressure causes the bike performance to lag big time. Though you might have noticed by now if that was the case.

                  Looks like the chain got elongated partially, hence its tight at some place, loose at other. Change the chain-sprocket set if that is the case.

                    Yes, I think thats the case. However its a bloody expensive job - would cost 3k. The mechanic said that I should wait for the winter to pass and then change the set.

                      I don't think running in should be followed strictly since it's an F.I...only carb have strict running in period.

                      Chain getting ruined in 5200 KM have something to do with your way of riding it. I don't think a R15 would get ruined like this in just 1 Year.

                      Like the other guy said there might be damage to clutch plates too.. BTW...have you been riding with you hands on the clutch all the time.?

                      and can you test the speed timings.?

                      0-60/0-100 etc.

                      0-60 timing should be ~4-4.5 seconds.

                      Unsure about 0-100 though.

                        The bike is too new for the clutch to develop any problems...if they are offering you a chain kit replacement go for it-it might just be a manufacturing defect.
                        Quench my thirst with gasoline!
