  • Honda Activa 2003 model demands engine work

My activa is 2003 model. On my recent visit to Honda A.S.S, they said my activa needs engine work where whole engine would be opened & that would cost 8k! upon asking they said, the "valves" of engine has eroded. not sure what that means. can anyone explain?

when I asked, what happens if I don't get the repair done. they said after a month or so, the engine will stall also, I asked a local mechanic, he quoted 2.5k for the same & said he wiil make in valves in old using some machine & that process would take entire day.

so, can anyone advice if I buy a new bike is a good idea? Assuming life of activa is almost over. And from now, activa would require maintenance & the breakdown would be frequent as its a older machine? OR I should get the repair done?

what is the smart thing to do here?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Warning - If you don't have patience, pls DO NOT read this post. I wouldn't mind even if you report to the mods & get this deleted

      1. Understand, understand, understand, understand & understand what jobs will be carried out by ASC as well by your local mechanic
      2. List down all the tasks, items by item, in a notebook right in front of them (ASC & the mechanic; tell them you're suffering from short term memory loss)
      3. Come home & compare (or post them here task by task) the jobs that are noted down between ASC & mechanic
      4. Optional - Next weekend, take it to different Honda ASC & another mechanic (optional) & ask for their suggestion & write them down, item by item. Repeat #3 with the tasks from step #4 so that you get tasks listed out by 2 ASC's & one mechanic
      5. You'll discover how smart you are

First of all tell me - Do you think there is any problem with your scooter's engine or just the mechanic told you that engine needs work ?
How many kms on the odo ? Any particular problem ? What is the mileage you are getting ?(FE)

          1. Follow what Argee has posted.
          2. A new bore piston kit for an activa costs around 2500rs.
          3. A valve kit should cost maybe around 1500 max
          4. Timing chain 600rs max.
          4. bearings and gaskets (if any) - 1500 - only gaskets will cost much much lesser

What the ASC quoted is WAY too much, the local mech seems to be giving you the right quote wrt to price (i cant comment on the workmanship of asc/local mech)
And of course you pay around 18% (VAT + ST) tax at the ASC.
OT - Two days ago got my Dio repaired at the ASC since my regular local mech was unavailable.
The ASC mech did a great job (i was surprised at how well and swiftly he did the job) - replaced cone set and rear wheel bearing and purchased a tuff up tube.
          Costs:
          Cone set : 304rs
          Rear wheel bearing : 178rs
Packing / gasket - dont rmr.
Gear Oil: 75rs for approx 120ml (they just used the oil from the plastic bottle 'squeezy type' which was used for general lubrication) - i normally buy gear oil for 40rs (200ml or so i guess)
          tuff up tube: 454rs
          labor: 350rs
          Tax - 18%
total cost 1555rs (their credit card machine wasn't on its best behavior, so had the amount deducted twice , they asked me to bring my card statement and will refund the money)
All prices approx, cant rmr it exactly. IMO, the asc mechs should be able to do a good job on the activa's . i suggest you hang around when the job is getting done like i do. some mechs are lazy (and partly due to the rush at the asc's) and just want to rush thru the job n move on to the next vehicle
