  • 18 inch tyres and alloys for RE Electra TS

    Hi,

I have booked RE Electra 350 and shall get it in few days. This is regarding fitting alloy wheels and 18 inch MRF tires while taking delivery.
    My reasons are:
I like the reduced height that i shall obtain after the fitting 18 inches.
also the looks of the broad tires
i feel that the handling would be better with these tires
i feel that alloys are safer and maintenance free compared to stock spokes.

The dealer i went to has no problem in getting these mods done. He is charging 7000 each for tires and alloys. He says that the mods if performed at his service center will not void the warranty.

Kindly advice if it is OK to switch to 18 inch tires and alloys. Will it affect the handling or performance etc. Will there be any adverse effect on the Bike due to this. Im new to RE, though have been a biker for many years currently owning P180.
    Awaiting the expert opinions.

    Regards,

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      Hi Urban-nomad,

Your service center guy is not providing the correct information to you. The change will void the warranty. It is therefore advisable to make any modifications after the warranty period from a reputed mechanic or person qualified enough to make the changes. BTW, the spoke wheels are equally safe; not heard of anyone having problems with the spokes. The 18 inch wheels themselves will not cause any issues; however a broader tire will affect the mileage of the bike. It is bound to drop from your current mileage figures. Do not go for tires broader than 3.5 inch. If you will be using your bike primarily for city riding, then the stock wheels and tires are good enough for every day commute.

      I too recently upgraded to a RE Electra 350 from a Pulsar 150 UG2.

Enjoy riding as it is fun to ride the bull.

Warranty is dealer specific !! Has nothing to do with changing from spoke to alloys.

I have changed my STD's 19" rim to 18" rim of Classic with 100/90-18 tyre. Handling is good. However your ground clearance will reduce. Acceleration will increase and top end will decrease as the rim diameter is going to reduce, with that your mileage will drop a bit.

Having alloys will be useful only if you want tubeless tyres. Otherwise spokes are good enough.

          Thanks

Thanks BlrGuy and Shreeni0403 for your valuable replies.

Im buying the bike for minor runs in my city Delhi and occasional trips outside city. Its true that riding a bull is incomparable and thats the reason why im buying it. Its more of passion than utility of the bike. On the basis of your replies i have decided to go for 18 inch tyres that come which are stock in classic. Im not going for extra wide ones.

Im also planning to change the muffler to the short bottle one for the thump. Any suggestions on that part.

There are a number of threads on this forum as well as others on mufflers for RE. Most of them recommend to change it only after you have completed 3K kms of riding using the stock muffler. Use your bike in stock condition for the first few months till you get to know it well enough to decide on which mods you would like to go in for.

Re: 18 inch tyres and alloys for RE Electra TS

I found changing to18" tires front and back that at high speeds the bike is not as stable as before. Also changing the front tire to anything bigger than stock will affect the handling of the bike (the bike turns slower).

Warranty is manufacturer specific and not dealers. A dealer is only a representative of the manufacturer and will not have a say if the warranty claim is dis-approved by the manufacturer.
If the dealer is saying that he will take of warranty if the wheels are fitted at his showroom, am sure at the time of any claim the scene would change. Advice is stay stock till warranty period and carry out mods later.

I would suggest it to be stock atleast till the warranty period and then you can look at modifying

Warranty is manufacturer specific, agreed. But under many circumstances one dealer might reject warranty and another might agree for warranty. Donno the internal affairs what they have !! Not once but faced it many times. And for changing the rim, one can't void the engine warranty !!

Agree on your advice to stay stock, but if he is really willing to go with 18" then !
