  • Pulsar 200 DTSi clutchplate change

So my '08 P200 needs a clutchplate change after about 33k on the odo.

Shreeram Bajaj from Ghatkopar, M'bai has quoted me 1800-2000 for the spares + labour. This, if I remember correctly is without the requisite engine oil change. However, some friends are saying that the estimate is on the higher side. Now my queries are-
    1. Am I being fairly charged? Do rates differ across ASCs? There don't seem to be too many active P200 users here so I'm not sure if I can compare prices. Does the P220/ 180 UGIV have identical clutchplates?
    2. What engine oil should I go for? Currently on Castrol Activ 20W-40. ASC manager has recommended Motul last time, but I'm keen to try out Shell.
    3. Does a conked cluch plate directly affect the exhaust note? The bike's been sounding pretty raucous

As always, thanks in advance for taking time out for reading this and replying!

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

any good quality mineral or semi-synthetic oil is good enough, i am currently using Shell Advance AX7, it is a good oil, even motul is good. castrol power1 if original is good.

        1. Are you sure that they are charging that rate ONLY for Clutch plate change? Its really sky high.
        2. I have moved to Shell Advance Syn for my P150 UGIII. Notable change in pickup and engine smoothness, but color changes very soon than mineral counterparts which is good. 700 cold bucks. And since its a clutch change, you will need 1100 mL, so two bottles.
        3. If your clutch plates are conked, you will be losing torque like whats happening with my bike. Check if you have anymore issue with your machine since raucous note may be sign of piston wear.

Thanks for the reply, I'm contemplating between the same- AX7 and Motul 7100

          1. I tried to call and speak to the Serivice Mgr, but couldn't get through, now even I'm sceptical.
          2. Are you referring to the AX7?
          3. Oh I just hope that this fixes the last of the serious mechanical woes. Bajaj checked it last time and didn't report any piston wear....I just hope nothing else comes up now to siphon funds from my bank account

The best is to call Bajaj customer help line. They will guide you. Tell them you are not satisfied with the regular service station, they will give you alternate contacts.

The one I have been using is Shell Advance Ultra. Grey bottle. Holds till 5000 Km in city riding conditions.

Do a cross check before you start.

Managed to get through today. Also called up 3 other ASCs all of whom consistently quoted min of 1500 for the clutch nd pressure plates with labour. Engine oil extra.
Guess I'll bite the bullet as I don't have much time and don't trust private workshops.

That's the most superior one in the Shell range, recommended for multi-cylinder engines... What bike do you ride?. The AX7 is the blue one that's one level lower- SS.

Do a cross check before you start.
EDIT: I've turned the bike in at the regular ASC. They've quoted approx 1500 for the clutchplate change with labour + 1500 for oil (775/ litre for Motul 7100 20W50, bike needs 1.2 l ). Have opted for this 3M solution that supposed to be added to enhance performance- Rs. 250 for that. Then there are some small niggles to be sorted- chain, rear brake light switch et al.
