  • 2009 TVS APACHE RTR 160 CC Multiple issues

    Dear Expert,

I am Rajdeep from Kolkata and rider of TVS Apache RTR 160 Model ( with out FI & with Double disk ). My bike run only 12400 Kms in 3 years. I installed K&A 1060 Air filter on my bike. Overall bike condition is Good. But i have few question regarding some noise and SE setup.

*** After installing the K&A Sound is awesome and fuel consumption not much effected.***

After 3rd service of my Bike from TVS service center i found my bike not easily cross the speed 55KMS/ hour. Its making bad engine noise & the Gear lever not working well. So i visit another TVs service center and they told me the Clutch plate need replacing. So i did that. After that my bike easily touch 62 KMS / hour speed and then again bad noise came.
So i again visit a local bike service center and the person told me the Clutch plate is not properly set. So he did that instantly and also adjust the Accelerator cable. After that the bike running smooth when i make the speed @72 - 74 KMS/ hour. He told me to visit him later with time so he can remove the clutch plate and reset the setting.

    So my question

    1. As per his information do you thing he is in the right way for solving the problem ?
( Basically before 3rd service my bike goes 98 - 110 Kms/ hour easily with out any problem )

Now another part which may be related with the above problem. Most of my friends having the same model of this bike and when i check there Digital display there i found an option SE. The SE showing there each of the bike 2.1 between 5.5 or 6 . But my Bike was showing 9.9 and after instant last service its showing 9.2.
What i understand about this SE , its mean the bike goes 0 - 60 km/ hour in SE mention second. For example mine is take 0 - 60 Km/ hour in 9.2 sec . If i am right about SE so please let me know

    2. How do i set the SE between 2 - 6 sec.

I always preferred perfectness in my stuff & i feel my bike is not perfect at the moment. So please help me to resolve this problem.

    3. There is another thing & that is a a noise after start up the bike .Which sound like kit kit kit kit kit kit kit.... its i feel its comes from Cylinder Head Porting.

So please Suggest me what will i do to solve this problem. I am little bit expert to do my self so your suggestions might helps me.

    The Motivation.

    1. Making SE between 2 - 5 Sec.
    2. High speed ( 90 - 100KM/ hour ) with out making bad noise (Bad noise mean - Engine Tired sound ).
    3. How to solve that kit kit kit kit kit kit kit.... noise from Cylinder.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Problem one can be because of improper fitting of clurch or friction plates. Get it removed and fixed for one final time and it must solve the problem. Also do check the condition of the friction plate..improper fitting of clurtch plates eats away the friction plates life.
      Problem 2 . I din't understand what se is.

Problem 3. It's basically tappet noise. Get the valve clearence checked and adjusted to required clearence. And you are set to go.

      Cheers
      Ride safe

I agree with 1st & 3rd points mentioned by Krish. For SE, ditch K&N and go back to stock. With everything stock, check bike's acceleration and report back with SE reading. Btw, I'm no expert

It's 'St' for 'Shortest Time'. BTW, on a healthy 160 and a healthy instrument console, you should get 4-5s with a decent launch. RTR160 can only dream of 2s.
BTW, ditch the K&N and go back to stock air filter. K&N requires proper upjetting by an experienced mechanic. Otherwise, you'll end up damaging the engine components.
PS Have you done only 3 services in 3 years and 12K km?

TVS Apache RTR 160 2010 model engine performance issue.

Hello Friends excuse me if I am posting it in a wrong thread as a new user I am not aware how to create a new one

I have purchased a used Apache RTR 160 few months back. Since the purchase I have visited multiple mechanic shops in Hyderabad and TVS Service centre.
All i needed was a smooth engine . I have changed oil 3 times now in 2000km as Oil was getting black the service center people suggested to change the clutch kit which would also address the engine heat issue but not much difference. Currently my bike acts strange and its difficult to explain, below I have listed my concerns.

                Engine performance fluctuates

Eg for two days it runs smooth an then the next 3 days its rough as hell also pick up is not smooth. It almost feels that the bile has two characters. I am not talking about this issue poping up when the engine heats up , it stays rough throughout .

Engine knocking sound when i accelerate fast at higher gears

Low pickup when ridging with a pillion (70kg +60 kg)

Exhaust note also changes when the bike is running rough it sounds more bassy.

Any help would be appreciated also if any one can suggest a good mechanic known in Hyderabad for Apache RTR I would appreciate it . I was tinking of getting a carb cleaning done but not sure if it would help as I mentioned it has two characters .

                Regards,
                Abhik

do you properly warm up the bike before twisting throttle.first run your bike for two or three day with proper warm up and see you can still witness two characters or not

Hello I do warmup my bike for a minute before I ride it . Also as I mentioned I feel this difference the moment I touch the throttle of the bike after I start. Currently I am using 20W 50 Castrol Power1 . I mostly ride my bike in city and I donot push it hard generally 45- 65kmph . My bike give a good mileage of about 52kmpl . I was wondering whats causing this issue .

Check your spark plugs. If they have a black ring it means that your bike is running lean which explains the the good Fuel Economy even though the bike is running rough. Lean fuel mixture also causes the engine to behave in weird ways, mostly rough, hot, high NVH and etc.

                      Solution

Get your carb tuned by an experienced mechanic. And don't forget to clean the spark plug with sand paper before putting it back.

usually when a plug is black its from the engine running too rich? I did check the plug and its tip is filled with black shoot .
