  • Yamaha FZ16 (2008) Stator coil alternatives + Battery upgrade

    Hello XBHPians,

This is my very first "Help me" post on this forum and today I seek more knowledge from this awesome motorcycling community which is regarding churning out more power from my Yamaha FZ16 V1. I've been very reckless in the past and have gotten the engine rebuilt about 3 times so far in its 15 years with me; yeah I've not been kind to it.

In all these years it has served me, I've only let it be in stock for may be maximum of three years (not in the beginning). I got several major performance mods done on it - mostly engine and air intake related which put a smile on my face during every ride! I've now reached a point where I want to play around with electricals, wiring, and lighting but it seems I've hit a scalable wall but with your assistance.

    Coming to the point:
I'm sure most of you are aware by now that the stock stator coil and wiring do not cut it for the big boy toys of the lighting world and I want to change it at the earliest. Getting the coil rewound is something I want to keep as the final option but for now, I'd like to know whether there are other motorcycles out there, the stator coil of which is compatible with my motorcycle and is beefier enough to effortlessly allow me to use 80 W LED / Projector LEDs if not of higher wattage.

    Bigger battery:
Amaron AP-BTX5L (5 Ah) battery is powering my current motorcycle electrical needs with a pinch of inadequacy. I'm eyeing at an Amaron 9 Ah battery but am unsure whether it'd be a wise move to buy it when the stator coil is unprepared to optimally re-charge it. Also, I don't want to over-power any electrical equipment / devices if at all that is a possibility.

    In anticipation of the upgrade:
This afternoon I hooked up a single headlight relay with twin fuses (30A?) and beefy wires to my ride which supports up to 150 W effectively and it appears to me that it is doing a fine job not dimming the 60/55 W halogen bulb even in high beam while also getting the twin Roots air horns to work much better than before connecting the relay!

For now, I'm not considering HIDs but if I could get the coil upgrade as expected, may be I'll give them a shot too sometime.

    NOTE:
My understanding is that the headlight on my motorcycle works on DC and not on AC although the light used to dim ever so slightly while idling before hooking up the relay.

Somebody please give me something to work with here. My ride has crossed 15 years mark and is overdue for renewal and I'd still love to try the mods

P.S. I am also trying to restore my ride; I've ordered almost the entire body kit from Yamaha.
