  • Hard Chroming the Cylinders and other musings

The other day having a chat with an old yamaga RD350 friend, we happen to discuss latest happening in other parts of world on RD350/400. Most we turned down as impractical/impossible/too costly. Apart from jettin problems we cudnt find much fault with factory fitments. We discussed some pretty weird ideas, from advanced timings (and running the risk of holed pistons!!) to Nitrogen cheat i.e try to fix a CPU fan inside air filter box operated with a switch after bike cross over to 90 Kmph, and boost up the air intake, steel wire mashed brake pads (ruin the drum evem more faster) so lets sattle for slashed pads that will flow out thesmall debries to the outside of drum and the slashing will provide some sort of self cleaning and better stopping.

But one thing we both sattled down for was the issue of reboring time and again, since RD cylinders need re-boring often given the inherent nature of hig compression and faster wear n tear it also means considerable expenses time and again+ human hours involved to get things done on a bike like this. We debated over the issue of hard chroming the cylinders for more longer lasting piston life and more maintainability of having to run the same bore for longer time. I invite your comments and suggestions about this. I will try to give more input to it next time. in the meanwhile lets see what is your opinion.. thanx

hard chromed bores came in the fury and off late the kb 125.they r good but can't be re bored,u need to get another liner or barrel.

The chroming techniques in india are not upto the mark to justify chroming the barrels! A good sleeve will outlast the original barrels!

yes if u get custom liners like ron makes, they har much harder and outlast the original ones.

Yes I know both Fury and RTZ 125 came hard chromed and parished miserably in market. Hard chroming as a norm is used for heavy load applications and mainly for locomotives. And surely we are not reffering decorative chrome here. But my point is is there some unit in india that can hard chrome the barrels, and re-do them again when needed without ruining the barrels since I have seen some sleeved RDs down south as well but to say they they work as good as originals wud be way off the mark, undoubatly they were far better then what I have seen up north, also the propaganda about 'we will hard chrome your sleeves from 28 BHP tolerence to 54 BHP' is just lot of wind. The BHP bit have nothing to do with friction tolerence, in my opinion. So again, is there someone who'd re-mill the hard chromed barrels when needed.

Dont think so! Sleeves throughout india are not that good. Trust only Rons sleeves and he is not making them anymore.

yes chrome bores r used for heavy load applications.i think the sleeves of rddreams r still there as manuj was offered the setup.btw crazy how's ur bike doing pal?hope it runs like hell now

                Guys,
I have heard of a sleeve thats the same hardness as the ones you consider the best. Its done in Chennai and costs about 3K. They give you a hardness certificate and gaurantee that your STD bore will last for about 1 lac KMS. I will post more details once confirmed!

The RD400 Model has a very-very hard metal used for cylinders. The piston rings from TP which last for about 10K kms per bore on a regular rd350 cylinder, lasts for about 40-50K kms on RD400 cylinders.

my friend has a rd400, on which he tried putting NPR rings, and they only lasted for a few Kms before they broke!

Thanx for the input guys, tho am still runnin on std pistons, just kicked up this dirt for a bit of ideas exchange. Manuj NPR rings are said to be pretty good, am told they dont wear out as soon as some ppl make them to be. They produce some slack noice which is always ok to deal with considering they dont try and bore your walls too much. I cudnt get them so I put on TP ones and dude I can tell you it was a mistake, they are mainly used by the dealers as they kinda 'streamline' innards and supress con rod big end rattle and deliver pretty crispy exhaust notes till about start of power band but on sustain high RPMs they tend to make wizzing noice. Just my observation, different people, different strokes!!

hippie's right manuj, the tp rings take toll on a RD's old liners, the bore gets oval as a result, but it makes the pistons seal very tight,so the rattle and con rod shakes r subdued.manuj sir jaldi se us sleeve wale ka pata laga lo.seems to be good.btw how's ur barrel turning up?

Good sleeving needs about 150 hours of high tamprature which is ragulated to gradualy sattle down in about 75 hours, with 147 C being the temp when they are to be taken out for polishing... then about 40 micron of electoless plating..then again polising... uhmmm I dont know any guy in india who wud be willing to INVEST this kinda time on an a punny little sleeve for some god forsaken RD barrels.

                        hard chroming

                        Hi all,
iam new to xbhp and this is my first post,
i read about hard chroming the walls of the cylinder to reduce friction , could somebody please tell what it is about??? how will it improve performance???
where to do it in bangalore!

Most of the modern day cylinders for higher performance requirement have switched to Nickasil coating rather than Hard chrome, due to better temperature tolerance and resistance to coating peeling off under stress.

Its just the coat or the entire sleeve made up of the material you mentioned PSR ?
