  • My RTR FI sings Tappet music!! Help!!

    Hello,

I own an RTR FI. The day my bike clocked 1500 kms on the odo, I decided it was time to try some speed sprints. One weekend, I rode from my Bangalore house to my Mysore House. A total distance of 156 kms covered in around 1 hour 50 mins. By the time I reached Mysore, the tappet was making a loud sound. I didn't realise it initially, but once I removed the woolen cap and helmet, I could hear the noise. Next day, I took the bike to one of my mechanics. He told I shouldnt have ridden so fast. He also advised me to switch over to Castrol Power 1. After this, the engine kind of became smooth. But still I hear the faint tappit noise. I consulted the TVS guys in Mysore and also the Castrol Zone people. They all said, that level of noise is pretty much normal. The point is, I want my engine real smooth. I don wannna hear any abnormal noise from my engine. Please advice. My bike has presently done 1850 kms.

    Thank you.

It is not unheard of to hear tappet noise when a bike is ripped hard - especially when new. Get the tappet adjusted properly. Such noises should go away.
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

Actually what we are hearing always is the noise from timing chain tensioner. You adjust the tappet as much as you can then also there will be the sound. The problem which occured in the old CBZ/star. The automatic adjuster is not good.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

no it is not harmful, i have asked several service center guys, they said it has nothing to do with engine performance, normally tappet get loose after times, u just need to tightened it

If tappets are not adjusted properly, they will make noise. It is a serious issue.

Service centre guys are the last people you should belive in, if you want to maintain your bike well.

And its not so simple... like "you just need to tighten it"!

If this is an inherent problem with the RTR then what is the frequency of tappet adjustment ?

Chances are *FAR* more that the service centre guys aren't adjusting it correctly rather than this being an inherent problem with the RTR.

Anyway, I don't have an RTR, so cant really comment further.

                        Tappet..

Actually I had been to the TVS service center and they said this level of noise is normal.. I also consulted another mechanic, a trust worthy guy, who has been servicing all my bikes, right from TVS Spectra to my Blaze. He said that the noise would not be much of a problem. He also changed the engine oil. From Castrol 4T(which the TVS guys had put) to Castrol Power1. After this the noise has considerably decreased. My first service is done and my second service is due in another 300 kms. Hopefully the service center guys should be able to do something. Also, would Castrol Power1 Racing help in reducing the noise? My bike has done 2200 kms. I use my bike bike quite a lot. Daily to the office, weekends to Mysore. Every week I ride a minimum of 400-450 kms. Please advice.

I don't like these kind of sentences. Either its a problem or its not. Not much of a problem is a pretty problematic reply!

Properly adjusted tappets should NOT make noise. I cant help more cus I cannot hear what kind of noise your bike is making... nor am I fimilar with the RTR specifically.

And trying to mask a mechanical problem by using different oils is NOT the way to go. Your bike should work fine as long as you are using the oil recommended in your manual. Just make sure you are using the right one. Why dont you try the TVS oil itself? Else there are many sanely priced options for 20W40 oils (thats what the RTR needs, right?). Consider the new Gulf oil, Shell Advance, etc.

guys chill .. i know we bought new bikes and expect them to be like a SBK
but all RTR's and i mean ALL RTR's have the tappet issue ,,,
but if we notice .. the tappet sound wont come as soon as we start the bike or ride sanely ,., [if it comes then your tappets have a prob]

i get my serv from castrol bike zone ..
used reliance oil [i am VERY much satisfied] i am yet to try petronas sprinta

you seem to be quite angry with the service center guys ??

hey just kidding, do not take it seriously.....as far as your comment on believing the service center guys i kinda agree with you, but my source was reliable, that's why i posted here...tappet is loosely tightened on all rtr, u need to tightened it over times

hope the TVS people are reading this thread
