  • Optimising and upgrading Bajaj Pulsar 150CC UG4 for better ON-OFF road riding.

    Hello Everyone,
Please, give me some guidelines here.

    ---------------------------------------

    I enjoy a year 2009 UG4 Bajaj Pulsar 150CC, has run 29K.
Very well kept and is still crisp to run.
I never missed the servicing schedule and maintained it pretty well.
I have just maintained it with stock and original parts and 20w40 engine oils.

In short, I have a descent, reliable and completely stock commuter,
maintained as per the user manual.

    ---------------------------------------

Now, I require this stock bike to -

    1. perform a bit better and reliably Off Road, too.
    2. Must not lose it's elegant look and feel.
    3. No heavy modifications to the engine. (like bigger bores etc)

    ---------------------------------------

I intend to do long distance touring on this bike and see our India. (finishing my MSc by then ! )
But I intend to ride not more than 250-300kms in a day.
The speed would be moderate also.
Most importantly, I won't be rushing through the tour.
I intend to just savour the moments.

I guess, if I start planning right now, I'd be pretty much prepared and relaxed for my experiences in journey in April'14
than much worrying about bike and other trivial things. Isn't it ?

I expect OPTIMUM out of the bike and NOT maximum.

To begin with, please suggest -

    1. a complete overhaul - what things should be included ?
    2. which parts should I replace now (or better be replaced) ?
    3. Which parts should I replace a few days before to actual journey ?

    For now bike has -

New chain and sprockets and Amaron Pro Bike Rider batteries.
    Just fitted in August'13.
Changed front Disk and pad once due to wear out.
Rear brake pads are also relatively new, for now.
Replaced a bursted CDI kit once a few months back.
(LoL ! It stopped working in front of the garage, only. Didn't even push the bike to garage. )

Everything else is just stock and running smoothly.

    ----------------------------------------

Also, I'd be maintaining the bike on my own and want to know every bit of the bike.
The more I'd know about her maintenance, the more self-dependent I'd be in travel.
I'd refer xBhp and my trusted mechanic in case of some confusions.

Please, also tell me which tools should I buy to be able to tinker with the bike on my own ?
    (just some random spanners n screw-drivers I've, won't suffice. )

I've already got Pulsar DTSi Workshop Manual from somewhere on internet,
gone through it and need more hands on approach, now.

xBhp forum posts are also proved very very useful to get backgrounder on various topics/issues.

    ----------------------------------

I have been following xBhp for a while now
and have realized how people here are so tied up together with just a sheer bond - Biking !

Taking all the bikers here for granted and being a part of community.
Will be posting here time to time from now on.
    This is my first post.

    Thanks in advance,
    Harshad Garje

I very much appreciate you for maintaining your bike in such crisp condition, though I haven't seen it . . .

Now coming to queries, seriously why do you want to spoil a bike which is perfect now. . ? If you want something for off-roading, please by yourself a used RX100 or RX135, do some small mods to that by adding a flying mudguard for the front and remove off the holder at rear and replace the rear mudguard with a flying mudguard there too. . . It's one of the best bikes for that, trust me . . . Or else if you want something which doesn't require any mod then best get a Impulse, that's one freaky bike you should have if you love on-off roading (saying this considering budget). . . So, do keep your pulsar in stock and get something along with your pulsar and have fun with that. . .

      Cheers!!!

I am used to the bike for 4 years and 29000 kms.
It is in very good condition and I do not want to shell out more money for a totally unknown bike and again get used to it.
I am not doing some really big mods.
On a bit searching, I want to following things to the bike to start with -
        1. a complete overhauling of engine
        2. front and rear suspension oil change
        3. put in k&n BA2201 air filter
        4. change to some good off-road tyres but after a while.

But still bro, maintaining a bike that stock and wanna do some engine overhaul doesn't seem that good to me. . . That's the reason I said you with that money, just get a used rx100 for off-roading, they are the best for that. . . Or else at least you can get a samurai too, cheap and average one, you'll get it for almost 10k or even less . . .

Other than this, it's your choice and your bike, . .

Just in case you are interested in something else similar to the mod, have a look at this. . .

Found it in some website, looks awesome, you can try this out. . . Excluding the engine part, this is my option for you to go for cosmetic change . . . All you will need is a,
          1. FZ headlight. . .
          2. Bigger tires. . .
          3. I guess the engine guard is of Karizma's, not sure though. . .
          4. Shocks heightened.
          5. Attractive graphs and you'll have something like this. . .

          Cheers!!!

Re: Optimising and upgrading Bajaj Pulsar 150CC UG4 for better ON-OFF road riding.

            P150 modifications possibilities:

            First Stage
            1. hope tyres are already tubeless. if not get that done. under 3.5K...
but a puncture repair kit along.. 150 buck.. 2 minute time to fix a punture yourself.

            2. as its a DC bike, upgrade the normal bulb. current 35W. go for 55W... no battery issue.. just be more careful. don't keep light switched on when not required.
philips premium 100 Rs. Philips something 400-600 bucks.. night breaker osram 900 bucks.. take your pick..
            3. replace both spark plug upgrade to NGK Iridium. 550 Rs per spark plug.
            4. I wouldn't suggest going for K&N. you need to do lot of R&D in fuel tuning.. sending more fuel in as more air is coming in etc..
and not to forget more air can bring in more dust
            5. Engine oil.. if not already using, start using either of below:
            a. Mineral cheap oil.. Gulf same grade as recommended in manual. 280 bucks
            b. Motul semi/full synthetic. 500/900 bucks

            Recommended:
            1. search and go for better offroad tyres.. with better offroad profiling..
            2.complete bike check..
            break, race,clutch wires changed..
            front,rear wheel opening and greasing
            3. would add on if remember any further.

Don't upgrade to 55watt headlamp without rewinding the stator. All I can say about off-roading on P150 is, remove the center stand.
              I am back!

Re: Optimising and upgrading Bajaj Pulsar 150CC UG4 for better ON-OFF road riding.

What is the need of engine rebuild in 29k?Are you feeling any power loss?
My rtr is 28k and still as good as new.
Please don't go for KN filters,in off road conditions you will gather more dust to cylinder and tuning is a headache.People with bbore and other mods in xbhp are running with stock filter and carb for reliability.
                What you can do is-
1)For better light output change the headlight reflector to the ones used in bullet, with a cheap round headlight of pulsar.Use a fork clamps for saving weight.
                2)Better tyres
3)Go for shorter gearing if you want more power in low end
4)Use fully synthetic oil, change plugs to better ones
5)Remove dead weights from bike like saree guard, headlight clamp, center stand according to your requirement
6)Replace clip ons with off road handle bar for erect sitting posture
7)Replace crash guard to a lighter and better one
                8)Remove cat con
9)Replace mud guards to lighter off road ones
                10)Install quick throttle
                11)Change shocks to RTR ones.
12)Most important, several things might need replacement in 29k.Cone set, swing arm bushes, chain sprocket, clutch, accelerator cables etc.An overall service is a must so that you can gain power lost due to friction.

There you go buddy..Choose what you like from the list......!
"Vibes transmitted from crank shaft to frame, then through the bearings of the head stock and into the stem where it meets the triple clamp and into the clip-ons where it is greeted with great pleasure by my hands"-ratfighter mod rtr

                  Thank you all.
                  Really great info.

I was in dilemma about filter.
Same thing, what after putting the filter, upjetting and stuff.
I guess I shall just clean and refit stock filter. Do I need to change the foam inside it ?

Which tyres would be good ?
                  FKR or Pirelli ?

                  Removing Catalytic Converter?
Wouldn't it be noisy and polluting ?
After all there is a reason in putting it in?
BTW, do we gain some serious difference after removing Catalytic Converter?
                  I don't know.

                  Will do it all.

                  Will keep you all posted...
Need to go off the grid for few days.
                  Examinations approaching.
