    Engine overhaul or tyre change or both?

    Hi,

    I have a Bajaj XCD 125 (bought in 2007) and has run about 35K Kms. I always had a couple of issues with it (since the purchase):

    • The engines shuts off when idle for a few seconds. I initially observed it during rain and took a lot of time to start again. After numerous services, now, it shuts off when I go through a big bump or on a bumpy road for a small distance or sometimes for no reason. I have to keep rising the accelerator to keep it awake. I have got it serviced from various people but no one actually was able to figure out the reason... nevertheless, I still see that happening. Nowadays, I am not using it often, so it does not harm me much.
    • Clutch is another thing that troubled me for long. I had replaced the clutch plates twice in the first one year and that too, the dealer said it is my bad driving, so I couldn't question that since I just learnt bike driving then. Still, every time I go to a Bajaj Dealer, after that, they keep saying that the clutch plates need to be replaced. I stopped doing it after a while and don't seem to have much of an issue.
    • Another issue is with the tyres. At higher speeds (~55+), the bike shakes when I apply brakes and mostly, it skids a tiny bit... if the speeds are higher, the skid is more evident. Of late, there are a lot of punctures on the tyre. so, the ride is all the more difficult.



    So, here are my set of questions:
    1. Will an engine overhaul help solve this engine shut off issue? After how many years/KMS is usually an engine overhaul due? Is it required at all?
    2. Will tyre change be a good decision now? What is the life of a tyre?
    3. What is the best tyre that suits this bike and what is the ideal price?
    4. Is there a good mechanic I can go to around manikonda/hitech city/gachibowli/tolichowki areas to get these done?

      You sure have a big set of problems, let me just help a few or little here. . .

      You don't drive motorcycles, you RIDE them . . .

      Now to the topic,
      1. I don't understand the relation between engine shutting off and engine overhaul. . . You tried keeping the idle rpm a little bit high and see if that works, . .
      2. I think the skidding is because of your braking pattern, please practice proper braking, your braking should be 70:30 ratio, 70% front break and 30% rear break, please practice this and then see the difference. . .
      3. Seeing your stuff I think you need a tire to just commute, so try out Zapper Q, MRF Meteor M and CEAT Vertigo Sport, good options. . . Price will be less than 2000 and if you present tire is in a good condition, you can sell that off to some gujri wala for a price . . .

        1. Most probably engine overhaul is only needed when engine seizes or water enters cylinder or if its above 1 lakh kilometers that too only maintenence.
        I guess the problem might be due to dust accumulation in your cylinder if air filter is not replaced at proper intervals.
        The air flow will be restricted and afm ratio changes.
        Try changing your air filter.
        2. Tyre change will surely give you more confidence and grip but try a little wider section tyre than the oem. I think mrf zappers are available. I'm not sure which section tyre suits you the best but try your best in

          You seem to be a rodeo bull to SVC and local mechanics, they are taking you for a ride.

          About your first problem, get the carburetor cleaned, the jets might be clogged, but since the engine shuts off when going over potholes, I suspect the carb diaphragms. In local jargon, it is called "slider". Get it replaced with genuine parts from Bajaj. Also, it might be damaged carb needle. Use a new gasket while reassembling the carburetor, you don't want any air leak in there.

          Exactly what problem do you face with the clutch? No matter how bad you drive, your clutch plates won't burn twice in a year, especially since you are riding with those clutch plates which were declared as worn out by SVC. You may just need to adjust your clutch.

          If the bike shakes at higher speed while braking, check the wheel bearings first, if there is a lot of free play, replace both bearings. Now check the disc brake, if it is bent. Is your bike's wheels aligned properly? Does it travel at straight lines when you let go off the handlebars? Does your steering feels shaky? I mean is there any free play between the frame and the steering stem?

            I was just thinking and suddenly realized, since your wheel wobbles and skids. Your brake calipers need a overhaul, one or more piston might be stuck causing the imbalance. You need to get the caliper piston seals replaced to get rid of the wobble and skid.
