@rohit: some random things that came to my mind:
long journey pillion riding would be trouble enough. always better to single ride and possibly with another bike.
sponsors... then all of us here would have quit jobs/colleges and would be on roads all the time.
keeping you bike maximum to stock would be sane. but yes, you can get spark plugs and tyres changed to good ones.
tankbags, saddlebags, clutch/accl cables, oil, petrolcan... all these would be needed. not to mention good riding gears...
know the roads... once you have a routemap and a dummy plan let us know.
check the thread from techno as hydbiker said.BIKER ...the thrill and sense of self-fulfilment is obtained from living a little dangerously!

Ill write when my long trip is over
, ill know of the shortcomings then.
okay I am doing a 2000+ km trip so here is what ill be carrying along, it may seem too much but i've almost thought of every aspect.
For the rider:
- Carry enough clothing and appropriate accessories like scarf, sweaters etc if the weather is cold or may become cold.
- Carry enough water with you till you see the next hygienic water supply store.
- carry along chocolates, glucose water, medicines (if you have a specific allergy or anything like that)
-have a basic first aid kit assembled (band aids, soframyacin, dettol, cotton gauze, cotton roll etc.
- Do know you limits and how much distance can you cover in a go. Take rests and nature calls should be immediately attended
For the bike:
- A toolkit, if your bike has tubed tyres then carry along the proper spares to remove both the front and rear wheels.
- A set of clutch cable and throttle cable.
- extra spark plug.
- a pack of engine oil
- a footpump type tyre inflator
- extra bulb for the headlight.
- extra tubes in case the tubes on the bikes are damaged beyond repair.
- a fuel pipe (the pipe from tank to the carb) in case someone tampers with the fuel line.
will add more points I left out (cause i don't remember) later

^^A few more points:
1. Always have ur original papers handy especially since u will be traveling out of ur state
2. Always have a roadmap or highway map of India or S. India or if possible the particular state where ur traveling
3. Keep ur mobile charged up and roaming active. Store a few numbers more appropriately such as "Home", "Emergency" etc so that people can call these up in case of emergency
4. Avoid traveling after a full stomach as u tend to feel sleepy.
5. Try staying in a hotel with covered parking
6. Fill fuel from proper bunks
7. Carry a few antacids especially as u will be eating a lot outside.
Few things that I always make sure I do when I travel on my car. Guess these apply for bikes too!Democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep meet to decide who is for dinner. Liberty is when the sheep has a gun.

and where is Rohit???!!!
@rohit: it would be great if we have all points listed out come up in the first post itself. do it or not/ use it or not, just put it there. it would be a good reference manual for everyone later. just print it, check check check and go...
and once the list is up, we can check on it and let know if there is something missed out.
@xeno: all good. but the bulb. how many people would be aware of how to get it fitted right? same with clutch/accl cables actually but that can be easily learnt in a few minutes.BIKER ...the thrill and sense of self-fulfilment is obtained from living a little dangerously!
