  • Loose chaint/tight chain vs Quality of gearshifts

    Hi all,

    Am a geared scooter-to-motorbike fellow.

For a properly adjusted clutch, will looseness or tightness (both outside the limits of recommended slack) of the chain affect the gearshift quality i.e. make it say worse like clunky, hard or notchy ?

    rds,Ashwanth.

    Query Approved

I didn't quite understand your question though.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

+/- 5% error is ok. Otherwise, the cable (clutch) may snap!
Too tight would create issues and the lever would be hard, too loose it would clunk. Same goes for chain/sprockets. They won't break, but wear out faster.

Sorry Monk, I was a little unclear! (we are not considering the clutch, which is assumed to be adjusted perfectly).

This is my question - Will too loose (or) too tight chain make the gearshift notchy/clunky?

Yes . Chain slack and lubrication shall have immediate and remarkable effect on gear-shift feel and ease . Better to have a bit slack ( loose ) chain than even a bit too tight .

Thanks a lot - Divya and Pinaki ! Will adjust my clutch free play and chain slack regularly.
