  • False Neutral in RE Classic - Feature or pain?

    Hey All,

    I have a new RE 350 Classic. The gear system is very smooth when compared to another RE 350 classic which is about a year old. Smoothness means here that I do not get a false neutral when switching between the gears whereas the other person can take the bike into neutral between any gear by a slow tap to the gear level. I checked with RE and they said that any unit built after Mid of 2013 has an anti-skid mechanism which prevents the false neutral. They said that the anti-skid mechanism can be removed if you want so but it involves opening up the whole crank case and something else that I forgot.

    I searched on various forums and the only thing that I have come to know is that this feature is also there in Harley's. What I am trying to find out is the advantage and disadvantage of having the feature of going into neutral even when riding at highest gear. What I feel:

    Pros: You are riding at 5th and there is a down slope ahead. You can shift to the neutral between 4th & 5th and go free wheeling thereby saving on some fuel.
    Cons: Less smoother gear system. Might get bit difficult riding in the city traffic.

    I will be happy if the experts can share their opinion as well and whether should I get the anti-skid mechanism removed or not?

      WHAT??? Where did you get such dangerous ideas? NEVER coast downhill in neutral. Engine braking is a must at such places. Coasting in neutral/with the bike turned off is an open invitation to disaster.

        Sorry if I haven't kept myself abreast with the latest developments on 2 wheels, How can False Neutral be a feature?
        Imagine trying to overtake someone at high speed and suddenly your bike goes to neutral.

        And about the "Pros" that you say, did you imagine what will happen to the bike internals if after a downhill you suddenly engage 5th gear from "False-neutral"?

          I do not know whether it is a feature or not. All I know is that it was removed after customer feedback by RE post mid 2013 units. If it was kept all this time (RE waiting for customer feedback) then was it giving some kind of benefit? If I will engage in a gear then obviously will do so when the engine is in the right rpm band.
          New to biking and learning up stuff.

            ^^^ False neutral isn't a feature that can be removed. Simply RE/HD have some counter measures to avoid them. That's it!

              False neutral is partly a design problem and partly a user issue. If one is experienced riding motorcycles then they would not encounter a false neutral in principle but RE being a bike which is one of its kind, it has some such minor problems. But this will go away once you start to get the feel of the clutch and gear mechanism and please don't use it as means to get better mileage, worst, you could end up with broken bones! If all you need is to coast without gear then gently hold the clutch and release, this is a more surer way of doing it then relying on false neutral.

                Its not a feature but a problem.
                Bikes which had bad runnin period and neglected with improper maintainence would have this problem and can be due to bad riding skills and gearshifts .

                  Back when RE Bullets had the gear pedal on the right, they used to have a another pedal above the gear pedal called the 'quick neutral finder lever'. This enabled the rider to quickly slot the bike into neutral from any gear other than first gear.

                  I wonder if this false neutral is a carry over from the old gearbox. I would guess it is.

                    I don't know if this is a feature or design issue but false neutral is very scary in some situations.

                    Imagine this- Just before entering into a hair-pin bend, going down a ghat section,you down shift to use the engine braking but the gear goes to false neutral and suddenly your speed increases because there is no engine braking !!
                    You try to slot the gear or apply brakes, either way its quite scary !

                    My cousin has a 2012' RE 500 and it also has a neutral between every gear.

                    P.S- Royal Enfield makes good bikes and I wish to own of of them in future.

                      Hey shoeb, could you ask your cousin for his experience in using his bike with the false neutral. Does he find it always troublesome or it is easier to get used to.
