  • 2002 Honda dio: issue

I am currently riding a 2002 Honda dio 102cc scooter in Bangalore.

    The following issues/observations are seen:

    1) Cold start: always starts only with the choke and engaging the starter for 4-5 seconds.

    2) Idling turning off: At slow speeds, it turns off. This happens when i slow down in traffic; quite frustrating to keep the finger on the starter button.

    3) When accelerating from slow speeds to 40-60 kmph, sometimes there is vibration from the entire scooter. This is not always; sometimes it is smooth.

    4) Rides like a new scooter at 40-60 kmph speeds.

    5) When idling, sometimes the rpm is fluctuating.

I took it to Ananda Honda, Hosur road, Bangalore. They were so courteous with the SMS and the billing, but the service advisor dropped a bomb saying that the idling speed is all set right and the only trouble was the valves are bent; hence the slow speed switching off.

I am wondering, if the valves are bent, it must create a rattle; but the observations is not indicating so(my opinion only).

They have quoted 13k for the engine job. I have brought back the scooter.

Awaiting your opinions/suggestion of a good mechanic in South bangalore. I stay near Bommanahalli.

The dio has done 45k km. I am getting about 1 km for every 2 rupee spent: around 40 kmpl.

    Thanks for reading.

This could be a valve related issue or maybe a carb tuning required. And 13k !? WTF its is WAY TOOO MUCH ..even if you replace the entire Block+Piston and Valve kit
FYI.. these are approx costs: New OEM Cylinder block + piston kit costs around 3k and a valve kit i believe is around 500rs.. So even if you estimate 4k for the parts and labor of 1000~1500 , it shouldn't exceed Rs5500 , and remember this cost is for the ENTIRE Block+piston and new valves.

Forget about the first part of my post for now, and do as follows:

Do you see smoke from the exhaust ? Bluish smoke ?

Take it to another Authorized service center, and get it checked. It could be as simple as cleaning up the carb and also adjusting idle/throttle cable free play and cleaning the contacts on the CDI unit / magneto. Give the bike a good wash with the body panels off.
When was the last time you replaced the spark plug ? Try with new oem plug

If the above two steps dont fixt it, then It may just need valve adjustment/lapping. If the valves need replacement then it will cost you approx 1000rs including parts+labor.

The mileage you are getting is perfectly normal.
Meanwhile keep an eye on the engine oil level too.
