  • Help needed regarding performance mods on R15 V2

    Hi guys,
I have an R15 v2 in Kolkata that has run about 10,000 kms and I'm thinking about changing the stock lighting and a few other performance mods, so I need the valuable advice of my fellow Xbhp-ians.

    1) As most of you know, the stock lighting is pathetic, so I decided to go for the Philips Bi-Xenon HID kit (35W/12V), stock headlights are also 35W, I don't wanna go for the chinese ones because in reality, I've heard they consume a lot of power during the bulb ignition. The R15 has a puny battery (3.5 amps), but at 3k-4k rpm range, the stator would generate around 180W, that should be enough to power all the electricals and adequately charge the battery to operate HID. So, is the above setup advisable?

    2)
I've been thinking about after market air filters and stuff, but changing the air filter would increase air flow, the R15 does not have an O2 sensor in the engine, so it's virtually impossible (I'm guessing), to get the air-fuel mixture right, is it advisable to go for after market air-filters? What other mods do I need to make along with that to get power gains? Does it have a negative effect on the engine life?

    3) What options are available and what are the pros and cons of a re-mapped ECU
    ?

    4) I have access to a Leo Vince Cobra Exhaust for the R15 that is almost brand new. Is it okay to use only the exhaust without any other mods?

    5)
There's a performance tuning shop Motozone, I talked to those guys, they said they don't have re-mapped ECU for the R15, all they can offer me is this: Pipercross Air Filter, MSD Spark Plug, Ported Stock Head. I'm totally confused, if they are not giving a re-mapped ECU or tuning the air-fuel ratio, what's the use of an air-filter? I may be wrong but, without proper AFR tuning, there will just be more air entering the engine with not enough fuel to burn it.

I'm head over heels regarding all this, I want all possible mods with proper tuning and I want reasonably longer engine life too, I'd be very thankful if someone could help me out.

    Thanks.

No problems, though you may need to upgrade your battery to at least 5 amps and try not to use both headlights all the time, I have put a switch to control the right hand lamp.

      2) I've been thinking about after market air filters and stuff, but changing the air filter would increase air flow, the R15 does not have an O2 sensor in the engine, so it's virtually impossible (I'm guessing), to get the air-fuel mixture right, is it advisable to go for after market air-filters? An air filter alone is rather pointless.

      3) What options are available and what are the pros and cons of a re-mapped ECU
      ?

Well there's the Race Dynamics ECU available in India, then there's BRT of Indonesia which has an O2 sensor (not sure if it's wideband) and there's a custom ECU also from Indonesia from VJRS. Understand one thing unless you have access to a dyno tune facility with a capable operator, you will struggle to get a perfect state of tune, this is my experience with the RD ECU, otherwise you'll need an Wideband O2 sensor (available in India) and a data logger for the sensor, then you can do your own tuning. Not sure why all the so-called tuning shops that have sprung up all over the place are so lame that they don't provide this facility, it's way cheaper than a dyno and fairly accurate, bottom line is we're over a decade behind and it's not going to change anytime soon.

      4) I have access to a Leo Vince Cobra Exhaust for the R15 that is almost brand new. Is it okay to use only the exhaust without any other mods?

      Yes.

      5)

I had spoken to the fellow there, he said he had piggy back ECU for around 35k, I guess he's offering power commander.

I'm head over heels regarding all this, I want all possible mods with proper tuning and I want reasonably longer engine life too, I'd be very thankful if someone could help me out.

If you're hell bent on modding this scooter, understand reliability will reduce, maintenance and expense will increase, if get a camshaft make sure it has a decompression pin hole, this will save many of the problems that many of us have dealt with. Have a browse around the T135 forum and look up VJRS on facebook (He has a dyno chart showing around 19 BHP at the wheel on a stock block). Now we have faster bikes available CBR250R, Duke 390 and even second hand Ninja 250 R's will cost you less ultimately, plus a whole bunch of bikes 250 cc plus on the cards to be released in the next 12 months, so also consider that option. Another thing you can do if you mod the engine, is to ditch the the ECU and go for a carb set up.

      Thanks.

Re: Help needed regarding performance mods on R15 V2

Thanks for the advice, about the HID setup you said it's better to upgrade to a 5 ampH battery, but the R15's stock stator unit is designed to charge only the stock battery unit, which is 3.5 amps, so how will the stator charge a 5 amp battery, I may be wrong, but if I use a 5 amp battery, the stator will charge it at a rate of 3.5 amps/hour and the battery will discharge at a rate of 5 amps/hour, can u explain this to me.

One more thing is that, I've decided to go for the Daytona Racing Kit, i.e. Hi-Lift Cam Shaft, Daytona Ecu, Dagrex FreeFlow Exhaust, these kits are more easily accessible, they are already tuned, and they are being sold by Yamaha themselves, so I won't have any warranty issues and stuff.

I just wanted to know a couple of things regarding these mods:

        1) The Daytona Racing Kit is a complete kit with a high-lift Cam Shaft Synchronized with a Daytona ECU and a Dagrex Free-Flow Exhaust.

Now, for aesthetic reasons, I don't want to use the Dagrex Free Flow Exhaust, instead, I want to go for this, Leo Vince GP Corsa Racing Exhaust for R15.

What I want to know is, will there be a problem or a downfall in power output, if I use this exhaust instead of the Dagrex one along with the Daytona Cam and ECU??
I mean, the Dagrex Free Flow Exhaust specifically comes with the Daytona Cam and ECU, so is it necessary to use the Dagrex exhaust itself to get the most out of the Daytona High-Lift Cams and ECU?? or will any free-flow exhaust perform just as well as the Dagrex if I use it in combination with the Racing Cams and ECU??

I managed to get hold of the power charts of the Dagrex Exhaust and the Leo-Vince Exhaust.

Can you tell me what is recommended in this case??

        2) I checked the Yamaha website regarding the Daytona Race Kits, over there they recommend modifying the air-filter box by cutting it in half (I'm guessing it's to allow in more air), but one problem is that, a lot of dust enters the engine because of this, so I thought of using this, K&N stock replacement air-filter for R15, this is not a regular conical shaped power filter, it looks just like a stock R15 filter, only the material is different, it allows in more air, but is dust-resistant as well.

So, if I'm installing the Daytona Race Kits, I have to modify the air-filter box, so instead of doing that, is it advisable to use this K&N filter?? or any other filters, like Cosworth, Simota?? Can you help me regarding this.

        3) After all these mods, how much do you expect the power to increase by??

        Thanks & Regards.

Re: Help needed regarding performance mods on R15 V2

I don't have any experience with the daytona kit, I understand gain are minimal, you would probably get a better gain by just slotting in the race dynamics ecu.
With exhausts there is not much between the two, many other options are available, R9, GPR etc.
With the air filter the k & n is over 4 grand, I have the simota for the past 3 years and am happy with it, a bit of googling you will find many other options imported to India for around 2 grand. With a stock bore you will be lucky to get 17 bhp at the wheel max, with daytona probably around 13 bhp at the wheel. With a full on set up (depending on components selected and proper tune, 180 to 200cc, big valve head/uma superhead, modded throttle body or 32mm tb, 290 degree cam with 5.8mm lift and decomp hole etc.) you could expect somewhere between 18-28 bhp, you would need to have a proper tune though and dyno runs as well as a afr data logger, wideband o2 sensor (this is more important than a dyno), for a road bike. Reliability will take a hit and maintenance will be much more.

Okay, thanks for the info, anyway, I'm installing the daytona kit because I won't have to worry about warranty issues.
I just wanted to ask you one thing though, in the official daytona website, there's a video that says - along with the Daytona high-lift camshaft, modification of the air-filter box is required, the video shows a technician cutting the air-filter box in half, do you know why they say to do this?? If it's to increase the air-flow, can I use an aftermarket filter instead??
I'm guessing cutting the air-filter box will invite in a lot more dust.

it's to increase the air flow, I would put a free flowing air filter instead, as far as I'm aware even the Daytona kit will void your warranty.

Do you know where I can get a wideband O2 sensor with datalogger?
How do I use it with a Daytona ECU?
                Any idea about the costs?

By the way, I found this product on Amazon, it's a fuel controlling chip that plugs into the bike's MAF sensor and the ECU, it fools the ECU into thinking, the intake air has lower pressure, so the ECU sends more fuel, the AFR ratios can be varied from approx. 12:1 to 14.7:1

What do you think of this??

What do you think of this??
You'll need to ask "tuners" in your locality regarding a data logger, if you can't find one you'll need to buy one, probably from USA, I think rddreams have wide band o2 sensors. I don't think you can alter the parameters on the Daytona ECU, i don't thinks it comes with an serial output of software. Other options are the Race dynamics RR unit, the BRT unit from Indonesia which comes with an optional O2 sensor, not sure if it's wide or narrow band, the unit that comes with the Koso throttle body (this allows you tweak the fueling) or there's piggyback ecu's for the r125 which will require you to change pins around on the ECU harness connector.
Never heard of the kit in the link, I can't make out if it's a piggyback unit or just adjusts the fuelling like the koso unit.

How to TUNE my Daytona R15 for max. performance?

                    Hi everyone,

I just got a couple of mods done on my R15, now the problem I'm facing is tuning it right to get the maximum output.
                    Here's a list of the mods performed/installed:
                    1) Daytona Racing ECU 2) Daytona High-Lift Over Head Cam Shaft 3) Dagrex Muffler 4) K&N Stock Replacement Free-Flow Air Filter for R15 5) NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug
                    6) MOTUL 15w50 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil

                    Problems Faced:
                    1) The day I got the Daytona mods installed (without the K&N filter, Iridium Spark Plug, MOTUL Engine OIL) I was pretty happy with the bike's performance, it was revving high and accelerating pretty fast. Later on I got mods/parts 4) 5) and 6) installed and I also replaced the Dagrex Muffler with a Leo Vince GP Corsa Carbon Fibre Racing Exhaust for the R15. The Dagrex sound was too irritating Right after I did this the performance seemed to have gone down . Maybe it's my mind setup, because the Dagrex produced a lot of sound even at low revs but I was sure that the acceleration had gone down. I checked the Spark Plug and Bam! The AFR was not right. The Yamaha techs. said that they could make minor remaps/fuel adjustments to the ECU by changing the CO setting using the FID tool. I though the Daytona ECU was not re-programmable. Anyways after doing this, the acceleration improved, though I still feel the Dagrex Muffler produced more power, I maybe wrong because both the exhausts should produce same power. Anyways, ruuning the bike on this setup now, I am out of my wits as to what to do next, how to know the AFR is right. I don't even have access to a Dyno or an O2 sensor.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THIS TOPIC ANYONE?? ALSO, CAN ANYONE PLEASE CLARIFY IF FUEL ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE MADE ON THE DAYTONA ECU USING THE FID TOOL(CHANGING CO SETTING)?? I'd be very thankful for any kind of feedback/help/suggestion

                    2) I want better sparking to burn the extra fuel and air properly, ANY suggestions as to what to do in this case??
I have absolutely no idea/knowledge about ignition coils, ignition cables etc. etc., how to install them right.
I have however considered going for a better Spark Plug Ignition Cable. Please Can Anyone Help me, what to do in this case, Is it better to stick to stock igniton cable or should I go for MSD Ignition Cable or Splitfire Igntion Cable. I've heard these produce better sparking.

                    Thanks & Regards.

                        Performance mods.
My advice ,sell your r15 .add a little bit more money than you're going to spend on so called performance setups and there after hefty maintenance, get a Rc390/ninja300.
But since you've already jumped into the show ,good luck after all the trouble .

Actually when you use a free flow air filter the MAP(manifold absolute pressure sensor) senses howmuch air is coming in and increases the amount of fuel accordingly
But are you sure it doesnt hav an O2 sensor on the exhause?
                            This could be a blessing
Because if you have an O2 sensor and you put a free flow exhaust and donot remap ur ECU, your performance will drop but if you dont have an O2 sensor your problem is solved.
But do note that free flow intake will allow dirt into your engine scratching your liner and free flow exhaust will damage your exhaust valves but normally yamaha have very good quality valves compared to other bikes and you wont find them leaking too soon.
You can try a high performance plug but check the spark plug heat range chart which you can get on google otherwise your performance may drop if you use the wrong heat range
Each company of spark plugs has a different number so make sure you get a comparison chart of all brands of spark plugs and buy a plug which matches your original spark plug's heat range

And a ported stock head too will help performance greatly.
