  • Need help in choosing a GPS system

    Hello,

My name is Praveen and I'm an avid tourer. I'm on the lookout for a GPS system, and really don't mind if its new or used. I have no experience in handling such devices, except that I have used some of the network based ones on the phones.

    My primary objectives are:
    1. Track distance traveled.
    2. Track the route I have traveled, so I can make a map at the end of the trip.
    3. To be able to trace routes where there aren't well defined roads.
    4. Color is optional.

Do help me understand the basics of this and what I have to look for when buying one. Please tell me which kind of a product would be suitable for me. My ideal budget would be with Rs. 10,000. However, I can extend up to Rs. 15,000 max. I have friends in the US who can get these for me, so do mention if that would be a good idea.

I did some research on value GPS models for my final year project.. the various dedicated GPS discussion forums were really helpful. They had easy guides for beginners and stuff like that. I'm sure you're looking there too..

          Hi,

          There are two solutions:
          a. The Ultra weatherproof uber good stuff from Garmin. But no india maps. the regular ones are crap, and indecent navigation.
          b. WinCE phones/PDAs running MapmyIndia/Satguide.

Lovely maps, lovelier routing, but the good stuff in a. not applies.

had a 76CSx earlier (a) - lost it, but can tell you that India maps are rudimentary at best. Choose your pill

Finally, I managed to choose and get the Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. I'm just loving every bit of it.

Something that it did... Close to midnight, when you get on your bike, ride to your friend's place, grab him and head to beach, have an ice cream and return, this is how it looks like! Courtesy: My new GPS system.

                    Praveen, 75 Csx or 76Csx?

Congrats. It performs flawlessly, and I never leave home on a trip without it.

EDIT: I have the 76Csx, but it's of the same chip and firmware apparently.

                            ^^

I downloaded and installed a Chennai map from MapCenter2. Very basic, but good to start with. No routing, but covers a lot of roads. The area names are 70% ok. Still on the prowl. Got any?
