Transfer of Vehicle Insurance ??

Hi ,
Please Let me know the Procedure to Transfer the Vehicle Ownership & Insurance as my dad Expired 3months back & My vehicle insurance lapsed 15days ago, I'm confused on how to go about the insurance as some agents suggested to get new insurance in my name( How is it possible? & is it Legal) . Or Should i get a new insurance in my dad's name get the Vehicle transferred later get the insurance transferred( Is it possible?) Please Guide me on the same. I Know that we need Insurance to change the ownership of the vehicle. Also let me know the documents which are required to change the ownership.
