  • Paint protection for matte black finish

I own a 2014 Ninja 650. It has a lot of matte black finish and the usual glossy green. I am looking for some sort of paint protection for the motorcycle. Just 3200 kms old and the tank already has a few scratches.

Is Teflon coating any good? Will it affect the matte finish?

Also the zipper of my jacket rubs against the tank when I tuck in, is there any option other than tank pads to prevent those scratches?

What are some of the websites where I can buy tank pads, DSG has some I guess.

    Approved!

We do have similar threads, but none cater to Ninja types. Anyways, avoid teflon! It's not the actual teflon coating they do, they just wash and polish at the SVC.

    Steps you can untertake:
    1. First, dust off all grime and sand with a soft cloth to dislodge bigger dust particles. Then, wash the bike (Avoid direct harsh sprays)
    2. Dry the bike completely with a soft/micro fiber towel (in shade only, not under sunlight)
    3. Use rubbing compound + wax on the scratches first. Make sure you avoid swirls. A little here and there on how-to from YouTube shall help.
    4. Finally, wax and polish (detail) the whole bike. Do small sections at a time. Expect aching muscles at the end of the day, but you'd be content.
    5. Park the bike in shade and covered (as long as practically possible)
    6. Get tank pads from planetdsg's website. I have one for 3+ years and they are very durable. (I have a humble Karizma)
    7. For more protection, get lamination coating done from 3M or similar outlets on most probable locations for scratches like the entire tank, rear cowl, visor etc.

Finally, don't lose sleep on this!

Hey thanks for approval. I did go through all the 18 pages of another thread before posting but there was little information about matte finish.

The rubbing compound, it should be used sparingly no? Tends to damage the paint surface over time?

I guess there is no option other than tank pads. I personally don't like them, never used them on my Karizma and not sure how they will go with the matte finish on this bike. But would prefer them to ugly scratches.

The 3M car care refused to laminate a bike and even if I can get it done from somewhere, wouldn't the film make the black part glossy? Is there any kind of film specifically for matte finish? I heard something of that sort was under development but not sure.

Yes, hence they are meant to be used ONLY on scratched areas and not on other parts.

Lots of options in tank pads bro. Not all look glossy! Sometimes, local shops sell better 'looking' stuff than reputed brands.

Nothing for matte finish yet. Let me take help of [MENTION=26554]nagoo[/MENTION] here. He got some lamination done on his GT.
Most importantly, guru @bluevolt has created an awesome DIY on the same topic.

          Thanks Divya,

i have used PPF [3M] for the bike , its easy to use and remove if not needed.

roam around some car decor shops for the PPF , you might get it for cheap. you can apply without any help easily. undoubtedly its good stuff.

          HOw to apply PPF ?

          1. make sure you have cleaned the surface where you want to apply.
          2. Don't apply as single Big area , instead cut them in small areas pieces [not more than 6 inch]
          3. applying in curved area is little difficult, so if there is any curve apply in small pieces

          4. take a bucket of water , wash your hands , soak the PPF film in that for 5 sec and remove the back paper [to reveal sticky PPF which you will apply] inside water only.
          5. now sprinkle some water on the surface on which PPF to be applied.
          6. now slowly put/stick PPF in place, now due to water you will have some advantage to re-position and also you won;t get any air bubbles.
          7. now using twezer or some hard piece of card/ [even you creadit card] squeez the water out from surface [similar to how earlier car window sun film is applied]

Note: don;t use soap water, just use normal clean water
          Nothing is Impossible ...
