  • downrating battery ?

I have a 2010 Unicorn which was originally fitted with a 7 AH regular battery. I has lasted on for so far but only with regular trickle charging etc. Now I wish to move over to SMF battery. I am very inclined to select 5 AH SMF battery from either Tata Green or Amaron and since that can fit in the original battery case, it is also very tempting for me.

What are the drawbacks of going in for a 5 AH battery in a CB Unicorn except for the fact that maybe one will have to give up on a bit of storage backup. But won't also the smaller battery get charged faster. And in any case these batteries last for 2 years at the best after which they start losing capacity. So is it a big giveaway to sacrifice 2 AH of reserve power ?

Does an UPS exide battery for Rs.675 tempt you? Using it for 2 years with 100/90 bulb and full DC without any problem. Had used the same setup for 3 years in my Ambition.

definitely I am tempted. What kind of connectors does it use ? I can see long strip of insulation which means that the wire has been tied down to the terminals. Proper clamps would have given me some piece of mind.

But do tell me if fitting in a 5 AH battery can have unforeseen consequences. Every battery dealer and technician seem to be dissuading me from downrating, they say go up if possible but not down. Is there any substance in it ? Aren't there many 150cc bikes that have no kick start and have just 3.5 AH and 5 AH batteries.

The wire was bolted to the connectors and the insulation is just a sleeve. 5 ah battery wouldn't cause any trouble with the self start and only horn is the load on the battery besides brake light etc. But My question is "why" ? A 5 ah battery

because it's easily available and all the battery dealers in town seem to have a 5 AH SMF battery. So basically I just have to present myself, and they can put in the new battery and that's the end of it. SMF UPS types are only available off ebay or online where I am concerned.

Also if the connectors are bolted on to the terminals, it will be very difficult to remove the battery for trickle charging etc. no ?

How is SMF battery different from regular ones used in our bikes?
My bike is RTR 180 AC,The battery is long gone, but I am reluctant in replacing because I may often keep my bike not riding for sometime and this will again ruin a new one.
But battery for Rs 670 is really tempting. But will that lead to any electrical issues?

I just received this amptek battery. It was shipped via 'Speed Post' but arrived a day before time. Looks pretty neat and seems to be imported. Dimensions are exactly same as the previous OEM Amco. I have put it on trickle charge and will connect it tomorrow.

UPS battery is VRLA battery. Use wiki for further information. Using UPS battery has never lead to any electrical issues in both my bikes. All of my friends have switched to UPS battery for their bikes. If a UPS battery can supply power to a 250W computer for 20 minutes without any problem it won't cause any problem in bike with electric start.

maybe that's why the Indian battery manufacturers have stopped selling sealed maintenance free batteries in 7 AH. Since 7 AH size seems to be readily available in UPS range SLA/VRLA.

btw Exide used to have a XPack VRLA 6 AH a while ago. Now it's nowhere to be seen/heard. Also their website mentions an Xplore range for bikes which is again not available with dealers.
