  • Need some tips before I embark on my first long ride

    Hello folks,

I am fairly new here and to the biking scene and am planning a weekend trip from my hometown Palghar to Pune this weekend. The distance is about 250kms and I will be on my Aviator.

As this will be be my first ride, alone, I would like to know what I need to carry with me. Also, the paperwork part. Do I need a PUC certificate for the Aviator? I am getting the bike ready for the ride with a full oil change and checking of tire pressure and stuff. And yes, I have all the safety gear ready. I am slightly confused about the documents needed lest I run into issues with cops. Any inputs would be welcome. I tried looking for tips on the site, but wasnt able to find one -- except one for cars. If there is a thread on this, let me know.

Any other tips from you experienced folks would help me a lot. Oh and if there is anyone in Pune here, I *might* need some help from you folks once I reach there as I have been to the city only once.

    Thanks a lot!

-And please try to ride in the left lane as much as you can
-Make sure you have back view mirrors intalled before begnning your journey
-Don't try to rush to your destination, just enjoy the ride

250 odd kilometres is not really a BIG distance. Just chill, take regular butt breaks, don't push yourself and you should be there in no time at all.

tTo begin with you are riding a modest distance. Dont worry, just enjoy the freedom that is a part of the experience. Thats my personal opinion. Please ride on the centre or the left hand side of the road. if you are not used to riding such distances just see to it that, your eyes are not glued to the horizon, as you might not even notice next the left curve. THat can be lethal. Take a break after first 30/50 kms; try stretching your legs if you have a butt pain. keep taking breaks after every 50kms as per your convinience, remmber this is not a 1 stop volvo its your bike, stop whenever-wherever. carry glucon-d mixed water (1.5ltrs) should suffice you. coz i was carrying 2 2ltrs of glucon-d that finished within 550kms...it keeps you fresh.

Dont worry you will be just fine.

              Thanks!

Thanks folks for your responses..funny to learn that 250kms aint that big a thing for most of you folks.. and here I am preparing for the ride of my life!

Thanks@me is rossi for the tips.. found some of them are really insightful -- especially about the "horizon" part. Oh I will take the Glucon D along

One more slight query.. is an Aviator good for a 250km ride? And this bike is just 4 months old. So, do I need a PUC for this? If this can be done on the way at petrol pumps, how much time will it normally take? I am on a tight schedule thats why.

Another *dumb* newbie query.. I only have the registration certificate, original insurance papers, driving license.. is the RC book separate from this? I know there is this booklet kinda thing but am confused right now. *scampers around looking for a place to hide*

Really? Aviator???? it will take probably around 3/4 hours if go at 80kmph.
Its better if you take PUC before hand, mostly available near petrol pumps.

since its new bike you would have a white Card/ RC Card, that & Insurance & License & PUC is all you need.

Remember to wear hand gloves, jacket & Helmet, Also wear shoes.

                Ride safe

I've been on a 400km ride on a Honda Dio - no problems whatsoever. Make sure you maintain a speed that both the bike and you are comfortable at. Keeping the throttle open at 80-85 Kmph is no good according to me, and also your mileage will go bust. Keep shifting your cruising speed b/w 65-75. You should do fine.

I don't know about the roads on your route, but if you're riding on wide 4-6 laned roads on non-geared scoots, you tend to get bored after some time, take a lot of breaks and concentrate on the road all the time.

New bikes are exempt from the PUC certificate for 6 months or 1 year, i'm not sure. The PUC warranty card should be in your owners manual. Check that.

RC book = Registration Certificate book. Back then... the RC was in a booklet form, the name just stuck on.

I regularly have to go to the city 110km from my village usually the total distance covered @ the end of the trip i would have done close to 300kms.
i just take my water bottle and a towel for my butt.I dont stop for anything .just this week clocked over 1200kms.ok here is what u should look out for:
1)TRUCKS u would be surprised how fast they can come to a stop.
take extreme care when overtaking these behemoths.

2)Use your indicators when changing lanes even if u see no one in your rear view mirror(never change the lanes without see the MIRROR).

3)"OTHER driver is not dumb" thats one rule i follow strictly.when u r on the open roads u find a vehicle suddenly doing things it need not do like slowing,
changeing directions suddenly dont manoeuver him BLINDLY..he probably saw something that u cant.
4)THROW away the horns that come with bike and get a LOUD one
these horns have saved me 2 times.
5)when changing lanes dont put the indicator @ the last minute.let it blink for a few seconds that ALSO gives u time to see the mirror .
                      6)NEVER OVERTAKE ON THE LEFT.

^^BTW thanks for the gulcose tip.

Plain water is not advisable. Plain water dilutes the salts and sugars in the body add to that you will loose some salts through sweat and urine. It is advisable to mix a pinch of salt and two tsp of sugar in a liter of water. Or you can try the glucose / gluconD / electral powder.

Coconut water and the coconut meat are a wonderful things when on an outing. Carry some dry fruits.

You know, you are making a project out of something that will (in the near future) become a non-event for you

Chill and do anything you want - as long as the bike is okay, the RVMs are there, its more important to focus on doing what you wnat through the ride:
                          - Good music
                          - good snacks
                          - the pleasure of sutta breaks every nice view place
                          - the pleasure of a lovely lassi on the highway
                          - the pleasure of a leisurely highway nap on a charpoy
                          - or even, Taking someone fun along

Don't bother about all the rest. You'll be through before you know what happened.

                            Guys,

I made it! I went to Pune yesterday and came back today evening. Total distance clocked was 508kms. The ride TO Pune was longer as this was a Valentine day visit.. and it took me a while to figure out my destination.. so had to roam the city for almost an hour.

It took me 5hrs 15 mins with two 10 min breaks for the return trip (one just after Khopoli and the next after crossing Vasai). Which is not bad for the Aviator I guess! And yes, the Glucose did help!

Here's my route: Palghar - Manor - Virar - Vasai - Thane - Panvel -Khopoli - Khandala -Lonavla - Pune ............... and back!

I would like to do this again!

@Whizkidd: See, we all told you it was no big a deal! Good to see that you completed the ride successfully. Looking at that grin after the line - "I would like to do this again!", I am pretty sure you are addicted already.

Good. Congratulations on successfully completing your debut ride. You will always remember your first long ride, no matter what. Trust me.
