  • CO emission level

Hello experts, currently i've owned a Honda Shine BS III model. I'm surprised before six months when i checked the pollution certificate it was grade-A, [ CO%- 0.278, HC(PPM)- 00043, CO2%- 13.41, O2%- 02.72, Oil temp. 026.1 C, Pressure- 0.18]. My vehicle current pollution grade is B, odometer is currently on 2,733 km.

I surprised CO and HC level has been increased.

    CO%-2.738
    HC(ppm)- 00327

    CO2%- 13.64
    O2%- 00.70
    Oil Temp.- 024.8 C
    Pressure - 1.02

Though emission level is under Govt. standers.

I didn't ride much between these six months, then what should be the reason of increasing the CO emission level, guys please help me becoz i didn't find any reason for decreasing the emission grade.

Few things that comes to my mind

      1. Fuel used
      2. Could be due Piston rings wear and tear, causing incomplete combustion thus increasing the CO content

Just give your bike a short rip for 3-4 kms on a safe/empty stretch early morning to loosen up the carbon build up. Get emissions checked again.

I used regular fuel and where i refill my fuel tank is trustworthy, second i didn't see any white or black smoke from silencer. Your option 2 is also considerable coz i'm also thinking about is, but the thing is i never hard rev. my bike and usually i ride it own. Few months ago i went through carburetor overhaul due to bad mileage.

Thanks for your reply, i'll do the same. If you see the past and present CO level, it raised from 0.278 to 2.738 and O2 level is significantly decrease from 02.72 to 00.70 it really abnormal...

That's correct Bro..anything could have happened..May be a ring was missing while assembly or something could have happened. Need not be revving issue.

Is it possible the carburetor is getting rich fuel mixture! coz i never went through a engine service...or if i go with your option then how it get A in previous checkup and one thing i must mention i used Motul 7100 10W40 before but the S.C guys say that 40 is not for this engine and since then they use honda genuine engine oil(mineral oil) 10W30, is it playing the key role increasing the CO level!!

Its better to go by the recommended engine oil as the W40 could be more viscous and bikes of our genre may not be able to freely flow them and could lead to such issues. May be, when you get the bike serviced next time, try changing the oil. Since you being from Kolkata, relatively hot, better to use a less viscous one. may be it should solve the issue.

                  Re: CO emission level

                  Hello biker friends,
I'm with the same problem again, as i post this post previously, that my bike(Honda Shine) getting 'B' grade on pollution test due to high CO level. After visiting S.C i told them about this problem and they checked the bike, tune the carburetor and told me to change the petrol pump also told the problem is sorted and i can test the CO level, but i didn't check the CO level then. I changed the petrol pump from then and now i tested the CO level and shocked to see the result it's remain same as previous(standerd 3.5) and my bike scored ~3.4 . How is that possible?? Friends pls tell me why this thing is happening, since by bike is new(odo-3873km). I'm getting upset with this result, coz incomplete combustion can increase CO level and i'm getting constantly low mileage (35-40 km/l in city to ~45 in highway).

                    valve clearance
                    fouled spark plug
                    wrong tuning
                    bad cat-con

Thanks for the quick reply mate, if the above 2 things(fouled s.p and cat-con) need to be replaced is it done by s.c free of cost(except the labor charge ) coz by bike is under warranty.

if the bike is under warranty then cat-con yes.. the spark plug is a consumable hence maybe not but wont cost a bomb..maybe 100-150 bucks at max...
