• Tank Bag Suggestions for Laptop and Files and Notebook

Hello Bikers,
Well I am from Mumbai and currently for commuting purposes i Just got the xtreme 2014, the bike is a decent machine and performs well too. I have to travel approx 60 kms everyday on the bike , due to my back issues i cannot take the load of my Backpack and hence facing severe back issues. Hence I am thinking of purchasing a Tank Bag which will accommodate my laptop , some files and a notebook or two and my lunch box and bottle of water.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A lot of people have been looking for an easy to place and remove tank bag for regular commuting. i can't remember anybody being successful. Most end up bungeeing backpacks onto the rear seat.

Also, i am not sure how safe is it to have your laptop bouncing around in the bag courtesy the large number of potholes. When in a backpack the human body absorbs most of the shock which probably helps the laptop stay safe.

I too used to had back problem while carrying lappy bag that weight about 5-6 kgs so i came up with some jugad , bought a back pack more on height less on width as could't find a good lappy bag of that dimension in market so had to do with non laptop bag ,bought some plastic type sponge (IDK what we call that sponge) used it as cladding for laptop ,specifically more cladding on the base to take shocks better . now when while riding my bike I loosen the straps bit so all weight transfers to the seat instead on my shoulders .

Re: Tank Bag Suggestions for Laptop and Files and Notebook

i will tell you, what i do -

(1) i have a cramster tank bag, simple and cheap, simplest and cheapest. ppl say lot of bad stuff about cramster, but in my case it is doing sterling duty since so many years. no complaints at all. if you want you can opt for other costlier options which will give you some fancy and luxurious options like extra padding, ability to convert to a backpack, water proof zippers etc. so you choose.

(2) now i dont mount the tank bag on tank, coz then to remove it for refuel is a hassle and on daily usage it can also scratch your tank. so i mount it on rear seat by using few extra straps purchased from market just like the one that comes with bag. in all you need 3 simple clip on straps to fasten it to rear seat and keep one extra in bag, in case any strap fails.

princesirohi - Laptop of size 14" and above doesn't fit in Cramster.

RISHIS - Only tangbag which I used till date and accommodates a lot of stuff including a laptop is Rynox, although it is huge and will hamper the maneuverability in tight spaces

it is a tight fit but i carry my 15" laptop in it. heightwise, you have to keep it diagonally.

but yes it is a very tight fit.

Re: Tank Bag Suggestions for Laptop and Files and Notebook

I use a Rynox tankbag for my weekend trips outta town & it is very handy when travelling with a pillion as it reduces the weight on the shoulders / back as well as allows for some freedom to stretch my arms, while riding long distances. I wouldn't recommend a tank bag for short rides, specially to lug your laptop or any other electronic gadgets along as even the slightest bump or stretch of a bad road could mean serious shocks that may result in the laptop / gadget getting damaged.

I would recommend using an existing backpack that has a separate compartment for the laptop so that it is secured in place and the other compartments can be used for your tiffin and stuff. Most backpacks have a slot at the sides to carry a bottle.

Look for one that has an adjustable shoulder strap so that you can loosen it and let the weight of the bag rest on the rear seat if it is heavy.

What also works for me when riding with my laptop on short sprints is wearing the backpack in front. That way, the bag is resting slightly on the bike tank and not all the weight is on your shoulders / back.

If you mainly ride alone and if your route is a straight one from point A to point B without any halts in between or lots of traffic, you may want to think of using a decent tank bag to carry your stuff packed in this order:

a soft t-shirt, socks or towel at the bottom, laptop in a "laptop sleeve" on top of it & another soft cloth on top inside the tank bag to absorb the shocks.

Instead of strapping the bag to the tank, try strapping it to the rear seat and make sure it's fastened real tight.

Wouldn't recommend this if your route includes frequent stops or if you ride through traffic cuz you don't want to attract attention from folks looking to swipe your belongings while you are stalled in traffic or halting for a quick cold drink / smoke break!!

Hope this helps. Ride safe & God Speed

Saw some interesting observations on the below site. Very valid points as mentioned in the below post borrowed from the same site (comments section).

Motorcycle Backpacks | Bike EXIF

"be careful of tank-bags (large ones more so), they could be a safety risk, notably on bikes with lower handlebars or clip-ons. A friend lost control of his sports bike at high speed, on the German Autobahn, due to a large tank bag - it ruined a cross-continental trip (and a brand new bike he bought for cash) he had been saving for, for years.

Backpacks have drawbacks (no pun intended), but all things considered, it is the best place to keep valuables, electronic stuff (the biodegradable pilot is a near perfect 'body' to isolate the bike's/road's vibrations) and alike.

It is the best for security - ie stays with you, for a quick visit to a roadside shop and/or a dash, to answer the call of nature.

A backpack is also the least likely to come loose and fall off. Trust me, I have seen professionally fitted panniers break off, on a BMW GS - not a pretty sight..."

----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

If you can do without a full blown laptop for your work, consider carrying a tablet with you instead. There are tabs in various sizes nowadays and can do pretty much most of the stuff you can (not talking about HD gaming and heavy image processing here!!) on a laptop. You can get a good configuration tablet starting below 10K (if you don't already have one yet ) and a usb / wireless keyboard (one that works on bluetooth would be great). The weight difference is almost 50-70% as most laptops average around 2-3 kgs and tablets weigh around 400-600 gms + optional wireless keyboard another 200-300 gms. That is a serious drop in weight that you will avoid carrying in the bag

This way, you don't have to carry your laptop which is comparatively heavier & also don't have to worry about riding on bad roads as tabs are less prone to damages due to slight shocks imho

Also, God forbid, you have a fall with the bike you don't want to be subconsciously protecting the laptop from damages. Rather use those split seconds to prevent damages to your self.

You could also try viaterra tank bags. They are pretty good. I use a rynox. As said earlier its huge.
