  • Honda Activa problem - intermittent turn off/loses power and does not start

    Hello,

My activa was running fine and is used for about 4-5 kms a day, probably nil on weekends.
I had an issue where there was a knock sound everytime the activa would pass through a puddle or dent in the road. I assumed it was a shock issue. Additionally the kicker was a little hard.

I took it to a mechanic who came with great recommendation. He serviced the vehicle normal tune up, fixed the shock oil change, brake lining, and he said he had serviced the kicker (wasnt sure what he did) and charged me 2500/- and said everything else was great with the bike.

Post this, the vehicle was fine (but made a noise when using the electric start, mechanic told me this would be there. A sound as though you threw few coins on the floor something like that :P )

A couple of days later, I ran into issues. The Activa would absolutely refuse to start, I could kick for an hour and it would still not start. And out of the blue the next day, the bike would start and work absolutely fine as though nothing happened. Another issue was that I would be riding the bike and it would just shut itself off and would refuse to start no matter what I did. This happened about 3-4 times and I called the mechanic.

The mechanic arrived and the bike started fine, I told him to use it for a couple of days and give it to after thoroughly checking it. He checked it for a couple of days, came back and said everything was fine and there were no other issues.

The bike worked for a week and the same issue started again, it would turn off and refuse to start. It would work fine one day and the next day, it would not start at all. I called him again, this time, he wasn't able to start it either, so he checked it for a couple of days and now comes back to me and says there are issues with the Compressor and the head (?). He said he needs to get the motor winding done and after which the issue should not appear. He's replaced 2 out of the 4 coils and it still does not seem to receive power. Now it's at a point where it does not start at all.

For some reason I lost trust in him, because I did not have the issues prior to service. Any thoughts on what could be the issue ? because I'm worried that I will start spending a lot of money in fixing this and keep spending with no end.

Also, the compressor motor could cause issues with the starting, but still does not explain how the bike loses power and turns off. I would really appreciate some help in this issue because the person who recommended the mechanic said he is a very genuine person and is very talented, while I have mixed feelings.

    Thanks !

    Query Approved
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

This seems to be a clear case of cheating. The mechanic may be talented in scooty and for the knowledgeable and bike aware person he would do the work correctly, but for a unknown person he used his talent to cheat you. If he did not changed any particular spare parts and he charged 2500 only for labour charges then chances are there that he just played with your activa and your money . My suggestion is go to honda service center if possible as there is a Honda service center everywhere and if there is no any service center then go to some other trusted mechanic after more search.

Regarding shutting down and power loss, I experienced same problem in my honda dio 2012 ( now sold ). 2-3 times i was stuck in heavy traffic suddenly garage was close where my bike was stalled so i pulled away till the garage. He just open and put some oil in the pipe ( sorry a complete noob at it ) but later bike started and was still runing till i sold without stalling. When i asked him what was the issue he told me there was a leak in compressor and and charged me ₹20. Same situation happend with my cousins activa. By opening up fuel lid for 15sec the air accumulated in tank was the culprit. And bike started and no issues till now.

Re: Honda Activa problem - intermittent turn off/loses power and does not start

I have 2003 Model Honda Activa which clocked ~48000Km for the last 15+ years. It had some trouble with starting (especially cold start) and used to get off on the humps & traffic stops (when accelerator is reduced). I didn’t bother much to rectify the same as usage was very minimal. After getting the Re-Registration done after the 15 Years, I decided to revive the vehicle to good condition. Read all the materials available in this site on starting issues of Honda Activa, I checked the Fuel dispenser, cleaned up Carburetor and spark plug thoroughly. Unfortunately the issues persisted. I have done a second time fine tuning of the Carb to ensure that there is no air-leak in the AFR screw (Replaced ‘O’ ring)….unfortunately without any improvement.

I decided to show my scooter in a garage. The first one checked and told that the ‘Valves’ have to be replaced. The Valve set itself costs around Rs 1500/- and high labor charges due to complex work. I decided to show in other garages around my area. Some said that “engine compression is low”, “pick-up is low”, “the cylinder to be re-bored”, “Piston to be changed” and the costs quoted were anywhere between Rs 3000/- to Rs 5000/-. I knew that I haven’t made any rough use of my vehicle and Honda engine can not be that bad that it worn out within 48000Km of usage.

At last I have taken it to the nearest garage to my house ( which I had not considered before). I met the mechanic who is very young - in his early twenties. He listened to my explanation of the problem very carefully. He reconfirmed with me if I was convinced with my own work of clearing the Carburetor and I confirmed affirmatively. He quickly opened the cover of the engine and loosened the inlet valve to the engine and told me it was too tight. What a wonder! The perennial issue with my scooter got vanished. HE charged me only Rs 50/-. I am using it very regular these days.

This taught me a big lesson ( Now remember reading it somewhere in this site) . More than the garage the expertise of your mechanic matters which result in Quality of work.
