  • ANTI RUST chemical for removing rust & protecting from rust.

I am kinda scared of rust which eats the metal parts and weakens it in due course of time.

So the question is - 1) Is there any chemical available to remove rust from already rusted parts, considering while restoring old vehicle?
    2) Is there any chemical which can protect metal from further rusting?

I mix diesel with very small amount of engine oil and spray on my motorcycle(excluding body and plastic parts) after wash for rust protection. But, I am not sure of using diesel.

    Any advise?

          dear xbhpian,

There are 3 things regarding rust that you need to keep in mind.

          1) If you have a brand new bike/car with lots of chrome- "preventive measures" to keep rust from forming

Always keep the vehicle parked in stilt parking as much as possible, if you live in saline/sea shore environment use plenty of WD 40 after every water wash in rainy season into every nook and cranny of the metal chrome parts. Use any good wax on chrome (turtle paste wax or Wax pol paste wax) every week after a good cleaning of the surface with diesel sprayed lightly.

          2) If you notice signs of rust setting in early, Clean the rust with rust remover like Rustolene that is widely available and stick to the preventive measures as mentioned in the first point.

          3) If you have heavily pitted rusted surface on chrome part- it is next to impossible to get back the shine without any pit marks even after a thorough cleaning. You will have to go for replacement with a new part if readily available. The next option would be to remove the rust and use a rust converted that will convert the remaining rust and form a layer of waterproof organo metallic compound that can be painted like any other painted surface.

          Hope this helps

            Thanks for a detailed reply.

My main concern is to remove rust while restoring old vehicles. I guess the 2nd point answers that.

I\'ve used sandpaper and steel wools to get rid of oxidation and rust from the wheel rims. Its involves a lot of hard work but the results are good. I would also recommend not to use a lot of water every time when you clean old bikes. I use hand bottle water sprayer to clean all parts of my bike everyday. I use a little bit of washing detergent to clean the exterior engine parts. And to protect your bike from rust, the best solution is to keep it clean and dry everyday and cover your bike always when not in use. I also read it somewhere that its better to cover your bike with a cotton cloth then a plastic cover as plastic cover attracts moisture.
I\'ve never used chemicals, petrol or diesel to protect or clean my bike. Spend at least 30 minutes everyday to make sure your bike is clean and dry before you go to sleep.
