  • Tyre Puncture Sealant

    Hi Guys,

My avenger has spoke wheels and hence Tube based tyres. I have a query on use of puncture sealant for such tyres.
    (1) Has anyone used such sealants in their bike tyres ? And practically faced situation where the sealant worked and saved when you were in middle of No-mans-Land ?
    (2) How much reliable are they ? I mean, do they really effectively hold-off puncture or just advertisement gimmics ?
    (3) How do you find out if tyre has punctured when tyre sealnt is used inside it? In other words, does tyre still deflate enough to understand that its punctured, but just saves you till the time you take bike to mechanic shop ? OR you never find out unless you get tyre checked and hence recommented to frequently check tyres daily EOD when on long ride?
    (4) I also read on somewhere (guess mouthshut.com or some bike forum, can't remember) that, some sealants are one time use for Tubes. Meaning, once tyre is punctured you are saved to take bike till mechanic shop, but then you have to replace tube itself rather than just repairing puncture. That is, the sealant hard seals the tube and Tbue is useless after sealant has done its job once. Is this true ?
    (5) If the sealant is really good thing to use, could you please recommend some brands that I should buy rather than other ones ? Or websites Or shops in Pune/Mumbai ?

    (6) Any other ideas are welcome, to save ourselves when on long ride and puncture occurs..

    Cheers,
    Prasad M

    Query Approved

I can't say about motorcycles, but i have seen people around me use puncture sealants for cycles. And that is the most rubbish product i have seen. It just makes the tube heavier which results in the bike running heavier, repairing the puncture is a mess with green slime oozing out everywhere. But yes we can reuse that tube, though would you want to reuse that disgusting looking piece of green filled rubber is a different matter!

Though all of this may or may not be applicable to motorcycles!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I beg to differ. I use slime for my cycle tube tyre and for past 1 year I had no puncture. However, recently a big nail pricked the rear tyre and slime couldn't do anything about it. But when I checked the tube I saw that there were around 5-6 small punctures, which were sealed by slime. Hence, they did work.

I have gone ahead with slimimg by classic 500 tube tyres.

Also, I have not felt that riding dynamics have changed post sliming the tubes. Though, I do agree repairing puncture of slime tubes is a mess and it is better to get a new tube.

Thanks for the feedback. Please let me know where did you buy it from, online or local shop ?
I tried finding websites in India for slime and no luck.

These sealants are something similar to the stuff in the mrf "tuff up" tubes used on Honda scooters and bikes. From my experience on Honda's , yes it does work.
It depends on the size of the puncture and does hold up pretty well for small nails where a regular tube would have instantly failed. The important thing here to note is that one needs to periodically inspect the tire for any foreign objects since the loss of air is not immediate. If you fail to do this, you will end up with a flat (and could be in the middle of nowhere) due to a previous puncture which slowly leaked air that was plugged by this sealant.

These are some of my experiences with punctures:
            1. On one of my inspections, noticed a nail on the rear tire of my Dio. Continued to ride on it for around 100km.
Air loss was not noticeable and the puncture guy had to be convinced and shown the nail for him to dismount the wheel and fix it.
            2. Another puncture.. this time noticed total air loss at office after finishing a night shift. This tire was repaired once earlier for puncture. My guess is that they do not last 'twice'
            3. Had a new tire and tube put in as part of regular tire change. One day noticed the rear was low on air.. immediately suspected puncture and got it checked and puncture was fixed.
            4. Similar experience with a Unicorn.. low air (enough to ride around safely) at the end of a long day at work.. safely rode to puncture wala and fixed.

Having recently acquired a Duke, I went ahead and asked my friend to get me a bottle of slime(for tubeless tires) from the USA. Received the bottle, but kept postponing to add it to the tires. Then I had just started on a 1200km tour with fellow bikers and there was loud pop and I lost all air in the rear immediately(we were on the highway and slowing down due to heavy fog) turned out to have two punctures on a 2000 km old bike lucky was at crawling speeds and puncture wala was just a few meters ahead. My duke has since completed 9000+ km and I still haven't added the slime . Those punctures could have happened due to one of my earlier 'off road' trips which finally gave up that day.

What I have learnt is that S*** happens, and there is no 100% solution.. you can only take a precaution that might save you at times but not 'ALWAYS'.
Get a good quality sealant like slime and it might help you.
The tube doesn't go useless after a puncture, but you might need to add some extra sealant. Again it depends on the size and location of the puncture that decides the fate of the tube.

              Re: Tyre Puncture Sealant

I am using Slime in Tube on my ZMR from almost 2 years. Trust me, it really works. There were many occasions where Slime has saved me.

Fixing a tubeless tyre is easy with Puncture repair kit and then fill in air. But when it comes to TUBE, it's a nightmare if you don't find puncture shop near by.

Slime is far far superior than what comes in Honda's tuff up tube. In Honda's tuff up tube, the tube itself is kind of dual layer and the liquid is just a thin layer between these 2 layers. But in Slime, you fill in the liquid in normal tube. Minor punctures goes unnoticed several times which I have blindly ignored. Slime will take care of those.

When it comes to repairing these tubes in case of puncture, it can be fixed easily if the wheel is removed and tube is taken out completely. But road side mechanics , if they try to fix puncture without opening wheel then liquid will come out n make the entire tube dirty and puncture glue may not stick. In these cases you might have to change tube.

Even if I have to change tube I wouldn't mind instead of getting stranded in middle of no where.

dont we have a tire liner for motorbikes?.. i use them on my bicycle and it works very well..
why dont you try and go tubeless.. much better in my opinion.. repair cost is almost 10 - 15 inr if you buy the kit and easy to fix it too..

Based on my knowledge, for avenger (or any bike with spoke rims) - tubeless can't be installed. I will need to change the rim to either alloy or false spoke kinda thing and then obviously buy new set of tyres. I am not willing to spend that much on bike as money is going right now in riding gears and bike is still under warranty..

                        Makes sense then..
i was trying to find out Tire liners for motorbikes and it seems that they might just work for a motorbike like spendor.. but for a really fat tire as that of avenger it would cover a real small area to protect from punctures and might not be really feasible..

                          Re: Tyre Puncture Sealant

I have Avenger 220dtsi and I have recently faced front tyre puncture while returning from a trip. I was lucky that I found one puncture repairing shop nearby and I was the last customer as it was late at night. Later I came to know that shop is the only puncture repairing shop in that area and the next one is nearly 20-30km away. After this situation I was really worried until I saw this thread. So there is way of taking preventive measure against punctures as everyone knows the hassle of a punctured tube type tyre. Please guide me about which sealant I should choose for my bike.
