  • 1988 RE Standard 350 trouble

    Hi,
I've got a 1988 std 350 that's been giving me trouble for quite a while now. The battery doesn't charge properly while riding even though the altmeter shows it to be charging. I've had the battery changed twice in the last 5 years, alternator changed once and the rectifier changed 3 times! One mechanic told me the problem was with the horn, so switched them to a smaller horn, which didn't make any difference! Another told me the problem was with the headlamp, so that got changed too. The button console on the left got changed too when that was thought to be the problem. The entire wiring has been changed, and it still doesn't make a difference!
The bike runs fine when I first start her up in the morning - lights work, horn sounds fine, starts in a couple of kicks. But as I ride, the battery drains - the horn sounds less, and eventually just stops, the headlamp becomes dimmer with time, and after about 45 minutes of traffic riding, the engine starts blipping too!
Please help, I'm running outta options here!

Did you check the charging coil? That could be the issue!

Re: 1988 RE Standard 350 trouble

I had similar situation with tb few years...showed it in authorized service center and RE experts but could not find a solution but eventually a buyer was ready to give a good price hence sold....hope I could help but I found the root cause where a local mechanic tampering (non RE one) where it all begun. Suggestion is to show who knows what this bull is made of and don't take normal mechanic suggestions unless he know what he us dealing with.... I am sure it is not that great if issue and things will be sorted...hope it helps !!!!
