  • Help needed to estimate and decide

    Hi Team

I have posted this query on a ownership thread but again posting it here to get quick response.

One of my friend's friend has faced a bad accident on his 883 and want to sell it off. He apparently doesn't have insurance which is bit fishy but that's how it is . If I am buying it, I need to get it repaired and then get it insured. He is from a different state, so I have to pay Karnataka road tax after getting it fixed and insured.
The front part and left side of the bike has faced major damages. It looks like the front break caliper, forks, HL assembly, engine guard, handle and switch controls and probably the front wheel need to be replaced. Let me post some snaps of the bike.

I also have to get few accessories like sun downer seat, back rest and rear foot peg assembly if I am going for it.

After going through this forum I believe that HD parts are pretty expensive. So I want to figure out how much I have to spend on the bike in terms of repair, accessories, insurance and KA road tax.

I am not a big fan of cruiser bikes ..but this beauty doesn't look like a classic cruiser and is just irresistible. I think this will suit me as I am acquainted to up right riding posture and will majorly do touring on this bike.

Could you please help me out?
I need to confirm him in couple of days.

    Query Approved

Generally the advice is to stay away from accidental vehicles. You would also need to strip it down to see if there is any bend in the chassis. If that is the case, then the bike is junk. This is besides the cost/ time/ effort that you will put in to bring it up to shape.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Karnataka road tax is the highest in the country. Added to that, you've repairs to do. Plus, you've to transfer the bike to your name. Haggle with RTO agents.
In short, you can get a brand new CBR 250R with ABS for that amount!

Get a new HD and have peace of mind!
      Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

I have not seen the bike in flesh. The bike is in Kolkata and I have to fly there and check the bike if I am going for it. From the snaps it doesn't look like a major crash so that the chassis will be impacted. But you are right!
We cant find that out until it is stripped.

Like I have mentioned, I am not a HD fanboy. I like this particular motorcycle for the looks, riding posture, sound and pillion comfort. Right now I am saving to buy a 300cc in 4-5 months and my budget is around 400k. I won't and don't want to go for a new HD.

The seller is asking around 300k for this bike and I can negotiate a bit. I believe the extra accessories will cost around 50-60k.

As dustom has mentioned in the other thread, if I am getting it repaired with after market parts I can keep it around 100k for the repairs.

Any idea how much roadtax I need to pay in KA for this 2015 Jan motorcycle?

From Calcutta. Wow. You need to add to your costs, flying back and forth and transporting the motorcycle all the way from C to B.

There are too many factors that could go wrong. Pushing through with this deal, would be really pushing your luck.

I'd have dropped my plans just on this point. The bike may be good, but it looks dicey given the circumstances.

The seller is asking around 300k for this bike
            Why is he selling it?

7.2L exshowroom means 9L OTR. You'd end up paying 100k+ as road tax here.

Re: Help needed to estimate and decide

Like DS pointed out rightly, either go for a new HD or better stay away. And you have quoted that , the seller does not have insurance. If he had one atleast, He could have used it for gettting the bike repaired (which is going to cost you a BOMB). So, riding in KA without an insurance is like Inviting Yama to take your sour away.

Oh and one other problem is getting an insurance for a bike which is not insured already and which has gone through the accident phase is another hassle.

My opinion would be....Better stay away...

Re: Help needed to estimate and decide

Even if you are getting this at 3L which seems like a bargain in your head once you really start adding the expenses you will find the riding cost after repairs around 5L. And that too it wont be as good as the new one. The used bike market is floded with superbikes that looks like its a deal from sweet heaven but once you really start examining them you will understand why they are being sold for scrap. It would be really disappointing to get the bike all fixed up and then find the bike handle vibrating at speeds above 60 you will get a headache and will regret this every single time. So it would be better in my opinion to be patient and save some more. If your trying to do your friend a favour by purchasing his bike then kindly do yourself a favour first and stay away.

Re: Help needed to estimate and decide

Thanks everyone for the response, That was really helpful. As of now I have dropped the idea of buying it and I have asked the seller to get it repaired first and quote me a new price.
The 3L price was bit tempting
