    Exporting a used bike to Australia

    Yes! That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing!

    I plan on moving to Australia, since i saved up for my Rc 390 and I just bought it in Jan 15 I don't wanna sell it and buy a new bike there as it's considerably expensive to purchase a bike there and all my savings are in the one I currently own.

    I'm not sure if anyone has done this before, if anyone has please share the details here or I could call or email you.

    I know that I need to own the bike for a year which is why I have postponed my trip to feb.

    If anyone knows an agent or anyone who could help I would really appreciate it.

      I haven't exported a bike but considered importing my Honda Phantom TA200 from Singapore. The problem I faced was the heavy import taxes and registration here. You might end up paying more than the cost of the bike once you add these to the shipping.

        Importing into india is pretty darn expensive. Australia is 10% + gst

          Maybe you could ask some of these guys for an approximate quote? They also have the procedure for import.

              I only have experience importing the bike to India (temporary & permanent) but dont have much experience exporting the bike from India, but shall share some of my general knowledge on your query:

              In India you will have to first de-register the bike and do some separate documentation from your RTO. This I understand (from what I read long back about a European rider who exported his RE bike) is a relatively easy procedure but may take some time and ofcourse some greasing... Then you have to submit that to the Indian customs and get an Export Certificate, which I dont know how long or how cumbersome it is....

              Then the shipping cost. Being a bike (which is classified in dangerous cargo sometimes), there is a chance sometimes they dont accept it as a box shipment (LCL shipment) and you perhaps need to take a full 20ft container for your bike. And with shipping volumes not very high from India to Australia, I am guessing the shipping quotes could also be high.

              BUT, the most difficult part is when you import into Australia, your bike has to be compatible with the requirements/specs of their Transport department and that can cost you both time & money. For example the RE bikes sold in india do not meet the EU or USA specs and for each of these countries there are separate requirement from tires, to headlight to emission stuff etc. So dont know what changes are required to your bike in Australia (maybe if KTM India is also exporting to Australia, you can ask somebody responsible in KTM and see the specs of that bike and do the modifications if necessary).

              While I fully understand your predicament, and although I dont know from the expenses point how much it will cost you, but my personal opinion is its not worth the hassle & time.

                  Export are the products and bikes produced in one country and purchased by residents in Australia. If it is produced domestically and sold to someone in a foreign country, it is an export. Although I think that it still depends on your bike. ACC custom clearance agent in Perth has this list of products that can be exported to Australia and used bike is in their list to strictly monitor. Used bikes imported here are subject to quarantine laws and must wash before letting it in.
