  • Bike issues and service queries

I am not sure where to post this, if this is wrong place, mods please move this thread.

Today is first anniversary of my Star City + and left it for the final free service.

    Issues:

    - If I take my both hands off of the handlebar when going in 50-60kmph (I don't ride beyond 60), there is a mild (but noticeable) shake (kinda wobble) and it subsides as the bike slows down and stops when it comes below 40-45kmph speed. I tried several times in the last 8 months, initially I thought it's because I am new to this (riding hands-free - Note: I did it to check if there is any wobbling as suggested by the mechanic, not for fun). But now I think there is some problem. I made the complaint when I left it for service.

    - There is noticeable loss in pick up in the last 1-2 months. I don't know if it's because of some tuning during the last service or something else.

    - It's been one year and I have made complaints several time about wheel wobbling, but it's still there. After 3k+ kms over a period of one year, now I can't identify the wobbling, I am used to it. They are asking me to try it when I take delivery after servicing and report. But I can't as I am used to it, even if there is wobbling I can't say it right away, it takes sometime. But they want my feedback right away.

    - I want to stay there at the SVC once and watch what they are doing with the bike. I don't know if they will let me. I am thinking of asking them next time.

    Queries:

    * I am servicing once in every 3 months. In that duration, I ride less than 1000kms. Should I top up oil every time I service for less than 1000kms?
    * Chain spray, I am being charged under this head every time. Again, should this be done every time I service?

I find it hard to talk with them when I have some issues to tell about the bike/dealer. They are not easy to talk, it's like I keep coming back with some issues every time as if that's my mistake.

    Query Approved
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

If you think their service is not the worth your money paid, I would suggest you to escalate it to their superiors. They would then come running back to you. I did once this way for my pulsar. They just washed my bike and charged me 800 and 2 days later I found none of the issues I had told had been addressed. No oil change, the muck and grease was still on the chain. I didnt bother to go back to the service station and voice out, Instead I got the email of the area head and dropped a very harsh email. the very next day, The people from the service centre came to my home and picked my bike up for service again.

I gave a good piece of my angry mind to those guys who came to my home.

Try telling them your problems, and make sure you be there till the service is done.

      .
Its always good to service and clean your chain for 500-750 kms. So, cleaning the chain will only improve its life and efficiency. Topping up the oil for 1000 kms is normal. DO make sure you change it for every 2500kms. The condition where we drive attracts lots of dust and its not good when engine breathes. You will be spending not more than 1.2L of oil. So, top it up if you are servicing under 1000kms and do change after 2500kms of running.

Re: Bike issues and service queries

        Thanks Monk and Archer.

So it's normal to lube chain and top up oil for my usage. Thanks for clarifying that.

        - When they asked me when I left it for servicing, I said DON'T top up. But they went on and topped up and the bill says it's a normal oil. When I replaced last time it was synthetic. Now it's a mix of synthetic and normal oil. When I questioned, I was told, actually they topped up synthetic and billed for normal as their software doesn't allow to enter small quantity of synthetic oil, they billed for normal. It's not convincing at all, it sounded more like a cover up.

        - In Star City+, chain is fully covered. I don't know if they actually cleaned and lubed. Do they disassemble the unit and do it? How can I check it? (I can't disassemble the unit to check)

        - When I took delivery it's almost dark, I couldn't inspect few things I wanted to and thought I could ask few things but couldn't.

        - Now the bike is rolling very freely, I don't know whether it's good or bad. Can anyone confirm this? Is this normal? I kinda think the "free-ness" is too much.

        - I took a test drive and I noticed that the handlebar shake is still present. Mechanic was in the pillion seat and says, it's NORMAL. I don't know, if it's normal why that shake is not present under 45kmph. Even after 2-3 times, he emphasize that it's pretty normal as there is imperfection in road. I am not sure if I should take his word or I should get some more opinion from different people or should I take video and post it here.

        - Rear suspensions were at different settings. I mean, left one is at one setting and right suspension is at a different setting. I informed them about this, I thought of asking them when taking delivery but forgot. Now it's dark, I can't clearly see them. Have to check them tomorrow in the day light.

        - Finally, they asked me if I notice any wobbling. I said, I can't now. I need more time and the mechanic is not okay with that. Have to talk with the customer support guy or with the supervisor.

Re: Bike issues and service queries

Went for a long ride (about 100kms one way), still I notice rear wheel wobbling. But I couldn't notice it when I ride in a smooth road, may be its because I am used to this wobbling for one year. It's very much noticeable when the road is little imperfect (I am not talking about worst road). When I talked with a local mechanic, he said it's not wobbling. It's because of the tyre design (big buttons), I feel like that.

What I mean by rear wheel wobbling?
It's something like riding on a lose sand/mud. Not like dessert sand, more like sands used for building house. And the bike goes little out of balance when riding on the sand effect. Though it's not happening all the time, it's there and it is subtle when it happens.

Some months back TVS customer support suggested to change the tyre, but as per TVS mechanic, tyre is perfect. No need to change it. I am okay with changing tyres, but what if this problem still persists even after changing tyres.

I am kinda tired with this issue. Every time I leave the bike for service, it affects my work. I have to take time to leave the bike for servicing and also for taking delivery. I am thinking of dropping the idea of fixing this issue and live with it.

          Handle bar wobbling

It happens when I ride with no hands on the bar above 40-45kmph speed (I don't ride above 60kmph). TVS mechanic says it's normal because of the little imperfection in the road. But why it's not happening under 40-45kmph if it's normal. I tried to film it, but the lens is not wide enough to cover the handlebar.

It's not as heavy as in this video, but very subtle. Go to 00:04:45 of this video to see what I mean.

It's more like in this video. Go to 00:00:15 of this video to see it.

          Please comment on these:

          - Is this common for a bike to go little out of balance when riding on the white markings (esp. new to relatively new markings) on the road? I have been experiencing this for a very long time, but it felt kinda weird and silly to ask.

          - Again, customer support says they change the tyre this time. My doubt is what do I do if the problem doesn't go away even after changing it. Why I am doubting, because of the mechanics comment. TVS mechanic says, tyre is perfect. Local mechanic says, it's not wobbling.

          - Is that (second video) handle bar wobble normal? Mine is little close to that, may be little subtler than this. Should I bother about that?
