  • How to wash a SBK in normal wash centres

I have this question in mind for a long time. May be a bit absurd, But wanted to get it clarified.

I own a TNT 600i and I live in Chennai. The place where I reside is nearer to the state highway and there is always dust and debris flying. Every day I clean it , next day I find more amount of dust and debris lying everywhere on the bike. I am unable to reach certain areas under the frame where my fingers wont fit in.

I cant take the bike to Benelli service center just for a water-wash. I wonder if I could take it to a nearby car/bike wash area. But I am a bit skeptical as how would they handle the electronics on the bike, where to apply pressure and where not to.

Certain things I would like to hear from fellow bikers here.

    1. If I am taking it to the car/bike wash, where all pressure wash can be used. I know the instrument console should be avoided. But what other components ?
    2. Is pressure washing a normal thing on the engine case.
    3. What else I should look out for.

Also, I someone can give/share me any good bike wash in OMR Chennai. I am planning to do this activity on need-to basis. If the bike gets dirty, I would take it for a wash, Or on a regular interval basis, say once a month.

Not sure if this anywhere related to this thread

    Approved!

Much like any other bike with few electronics, avoid pressure washing the console, radiator, battery and the headlamps.
Ask the vendor to keep the spray at 'mild' setting and water wash the whole bike from a distance. Also, use a microfiber and not the dirty rag they use for all vehicles.

Then soap the bike and repeat the mild treatment from a distance. Pressure washing engine casing is fine as long as it is not hot.

Thanks DS, But even after driving the bike for a minute, the case and the exhaust gets freaking hot. The nearest wash center from my house it atleast 3 kms away. So , should I let the bike cool down for a while before actually going for it.

And thanks for the pointers. Yes, I will let them know about the components to avoid the pressure wash.

Hoe about the O2 sensors on the exhaust pipe. Or can we just wipe them with a wet cloth.

Don't get too paranoid saar! You ride the same bike in rains right? Hot exhaust + rain water = dirty bike and no explosions.
If the bike is very very hot, then anyways you should let it rest in shade for some time.

Answer is same...would you allow someone to bathe your Wife? Instead of washing, learn detailing, cleaning, maintaining & protecting for a long time is damn easy.

To begin with, frequent washing is not good as it washes away the lube from various points of the bike, the most important being the chain, so you will need to lube the chain each time after a wash. Some pointers I can suggest is to keep the pressure nozzle at least 3 metres away from the bike as too much pressure tends to loosen wires, clips and other such things. Do not use high pressure on the radiator, it will damage the fins. Do not pressure wash under the seat where electrical components are placed. Get a micro fibre cloth like the one available from 3M, this is highly effective to remove dust layers.

Why don't you cover your bike with a bike cover when she is parked? If you do so, it will save you a lot of bother and preserve the paint against the elements thereby preserving it. There are lots of covers available online for as little as Rs.400/-. Hope this helps.
