  • Battery problem in KTM RC8 1190

    Hi guys,

A friend of mine has a KTM RC8 1190 that hasn't been started for quite some time. So now the bike is not starting, even after charging the battery to 100%. What might be the problem here?
Kindly share your experience if anyone has had the same problem in the past. Shoutout to all the superbike owners out here on xbhp. It will be a great help.

    Thanks

How old is the bike, when was it bought, for how long has it been lying parked etc.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Hi,

Apologies for the late reply, wasn't able to come online. Bike is 2013 model and it was bought in May last year. It was lying parked for almost 2 months i would say.
I asked a ktm dealer, he informed me that the bike should at least be started once every 2-3 days otherwise the battery goes flat and recharging it does not matter.
      Is this the case?

      Thanks

could very well be the case.
it depends on how good or bad the battery condition was before the bike was put to sleep. the maintenance free type batteries in normal condition can easily sit idle for couple of months and still be good. btw, check the fuses too.
why don't you guys try jump starting it using another vehicle as the source or try with a different battery. At least that will let you know if its indeed the battery or another electrical issue.
starting the bike once a week if possible and letting it idle for around 3-5 minutes is a good practice.

Have you tried push starting the bike? Done it multiple times on superbikes with low batteries

Just remember to keep the bike in third gear when push starting the bike.

Yes we tried jumping it with rc390 battery, gets started without any problem and then rode it around for 10 minutes or so but when it got off it did not start again.

You don't need to push start it if you can jump start it. That is needed only when you don't have a cable at hand to jump start. Also it is less cumbersome since you don't have to open up the bike to access the battery.

But if the battery has so little juice in it, then a 10 minute ride won't be sufficient to charge the battery. Go for a 40-50 km ride!!!

looks like the battery has gone for a toss. get the battery tested at a battery shop.
if possible plonk in a good used battery and check voltages at idle (around 12.5V), and at around 4000rpm.. at higher rpm's you should see the voltage go up by around 1-2V, if it doesn't it could be a faulty RR unit or stator coil.
based on this you can decide to get a new battery or the faulty electrical parts (because once you open a new battery and find that the culprit is electricals, the shop is not going to take back the new battery)
                these guidelines should help you

initially looked like condensation which some times happen sin injectors etc etc could have been issue. but then you say it started with a RC390 battery. then the machine is absolutely fine. a 10 min ride will not fetch anything. and possibly that battery is done.. get a new one mate. sometimes the battery get too low and left like that become unrecoverable. else take it out for a good highway spin.

lube chain first and check engine oil condition before taking it for a fast long ride..

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Got the battery replaced.
I don't know if i should create a different thread for another question that i have so i will just ask here first.

Can RC8 be ridden from Mumbai to Chandigarh? Have any of you guys tried riding a sbk for long distances?
Because i have contacted quite a lot of transport companies, and they quote Rs.35k+. Does a wooden container made for this bike cost that much?
Any help would be much appreciated guys.

                    Thanks

Check the distance and route, if possible take a nights stay somewhere in between. xBhp collectors ride went across India on a Busa and not sure what was the other vehicle. So, riding an SBK for a long distance is definitely doable, but you have to be prepared for it physically and mentally.

                        Can it? Yes it can.

Should it? Now that is a whole different level of madness.

xBhp had taken a Honda Fireblade around the country in 2006, a decade back, when infrastructure for superbikes was unheard of.

                        No clue about bike transportation!

I understand this is not a relevant question. Just a curious SBK fan here.

How much did the Rc8 cost ? What's the service cost and interval ?
