  • What are the symptoms of bent valves in a single cylinder engine?

I want to know what are the symptoms of bent valves in a single cylinder engine and its effects on engine health in the long run.

I have a Unicorn 160, whose engine feels rough and mileage hovers at around 35-40. The engine feels strained after 2.5k-3k rpm, although power feels the same. There is a certain sound from the engine after i let go of the throttle (after accelerating). It sounds as if something in the engine is loose and vibrating. I feel it may the problem with the valves, or the timing kit. I got the bike tuned from the ASC.
I've taken it to quite a few mechanics, including Honda ASC, but none has been able to solve the issue. I've tried Honda, Motul, Shell oils thinking it may be the oil that's the cause, but it remains the same. All of the mechanics said that tappets are fine and do not need adjustment. The bike has so far run 4700km.

Any ideas on why is the bike is running rough with the above symptoms?

Also, a request to mods to not move the thread to the Unicorn 160 thread, as there's barely any activity.

Thanks for the approval. I couldn't find a proper answer to this question. Indeed I feel it's good to know about this.

If valves are gone, you will have lesser compression, and hence less power. I could feel the loss of power especially at the bottom end on my P200 NS. Once valves were replaced, I could immediately feel better grunt at lower revs. Your engine will knock a bit if valves are gone. These are the symptoms that I know of. Hope this helps.
