• Temp registration issue

Hi brothers

I'm located in Gurgaon & My Honda CBR 250R's temporary registration expired yesterday. I haven't received the permanent registration yet. I went to the dealer & asked him about the status, he told me that they haven't received it yet from the RTO & sometimes it takes around 2 months to get it in Gurgaon.
My ZMR was registered in Delhi & I got the no. in 7 days & the RC took 3 wks to come.
Please advise how to handle the cops if they stop & check my bike's papers. I do not give bribes.
Thanks ...!!!

Hello,

If you have Applied for and fully paid for a permanent registration, a receipt of the same would be with you, this should be sufficient to convince the cops about your situation.

Secondly, your Permanent Reg. Documents may not have arrived at the dealer, but check the status on-line, the number might have been generated and made available for query (I hope THIS is the correct place to find it). If it shows on the website then you can be sure that the documents too are on their way. Additionally you can take a screenshot of this and keep with you as a supporting document (not evidence but supporting document) for you scenario.

Last resort, would be to approach the Respective RTA and get a status of your permanent registration.

Why do they give temporary numbers in the first place? Why can't they do permanent registration directly. And why does it take so long. In Goa permanent registration is done in 15-30 min max. Temporary registration is only issued if taking the vehicle to another state to register. Some of the dealers even have the facility to register the vehicle sitting in the showroom.

To avoid cop trouble, keep the cash receipt of the bike along with insurance with you at all times. You would have a receipt of road tax paid, keep it with you till the no. Plates arrive. The RTO took 2 months to get my no. plates and the cops were satisfied with the tax receipt, the cash receipt of the bike and the insurance papers for 2 months.

It happens when there are a huge no. of vehicles to be registered and thanks to the lazy RTO employees and daily strikes, the back log is huge. So the showroom provides a temp. no. so that the owner can use the vehicle till his no. plates and RC are ready.

In my case everything was ready but the company who was responsible for manufacturing the high security no. plates went on strike for some reason. So the RTO had my RC ready but would not issue it to me till I got the no. Plates affixed to my bike. So I had to ride with unregistered bike for more than 2 months, and was stopped many times by cops. But they were always satisfied as I had the cash bill paid in full from the showroom, Road tax receipt and insurance. Hope the thread starter gets off easy too.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

But then issuing a permanent registration takes the same time as issuing a temporary registration. So what's the logic is issuing a temporary number. It's just a 15 min job.

Beats me. It is probably one of those things which have been in practice only because they have been in the law books. Plus i am sure someone gets paid for this Step.

No brothers, the temporary nos. have nothing to do with the RTO. They are generated and issued by the showroom from where you purchase the vehicle.
As I said before the showrooms do it so that the owner can use the vehicle unregistered.
The records of the temp. no. are maintained by the respective showrooms and it is only valid till your RC and Permanent no. plates are ready at the RTO.

There may be discrepancy between state to state, because when my bike was received with the Temp Registration error (they messed up my middle name) I had to pay the RTA to get the name correction made in the Temp registration itself , in mode of a DD drawn in favour of the main RTA office for which they even gave me a full fledged computer generated RTA receipt.

This took 3 calendar days to take effect after which, as P3T3R mentioned, it was a 15min job to get the permanent registration done.
