1. Take a reliable mechanic/friend along.
2. See if you can approach an individual owner of the bike. Avoid students, IT crowd, dealers as much as possible. There are exceptions, but.!
3. Ask for all original papers.

I will suggest not to go to a used motorcycle seller, better search on olx/quickrr and other sites and try to get a bike from an individual. it will be much better if you take a guy with you who keeps good knowledge about bikes.
There are some points that you should check before making a deal
1. Chassis/frame of bike for any joint/weld and rust. if found then avoid that bike.
2. there should be no rust on rims.
3. check Tyres
4. Chain sporket should not be worn out coz it will cost you around Rs.1800
5. suspensions should work fine.

Now check the Heart of the motorcycle.
1. Oil should not leak from the engine.
2. There should be no smoke from the exhaust (It indicates leakage of engine oil in combustion chamber. usually a faulty piston. repairing cost atleast 3000)
3. Engine firing should be healthy. raise the throttle up to 6000 RPM approx and notice the sound from the exhaust as well as from the engine block, firing should be healthy and engine should not hesitate. and there should be no rubbing or irregular noise coming out from the engine block. (Noise from the block indicates worn connecting rod bearings.)
4. Get a test drive and check for clutch. it should not slip. also notice the acceleration.
5. During test Drive also notice the gear shifting. transmission has to be smooth and no cracking noise should be there from the gear box.
