    Engine idles at a higher RPM than its usual idling RPM

    Owing to the rains I had not taken my bike out for 3 weeks straight. When i finally thought of taking her for a ride, she just wouldn't start. After calling the mechanic, he told me that there is a slug stuck in the carburettor. He took her to the shop, opened and cleaned the carburettor. I picked up the bike in the evening. She was running very smoothly.

    Its been about 2 weeks since then, and I have noticed that sometimes when I have stopped at the signal or so, the bike idles at 3000-3500 RPM. After putting her in gear and releasing the clutch, she comes back to the idling RPM (which is 1000-1250 RPM). This high idling RPM occurs occasionally. Most of the times it idles properly. Also, I have noticed that there is lot of petrol smell when the bike is idling.
    I asked a friend about this and he told me that maybe the mechanic has increased the ratio of petrol:air.

    Is this good or bad? Am i wasting a lot of petrol?

    Please do mention which bike are you talking about. A 1920s Chief or a 2016 Duke!

      3500 rpm is a rather high, the first thing one would think would be the carb, but you already cleaned that out.
      Why not try the basic things first:
      Check the idling control motor, and the throttle itself.
      Maybe the air filter ratio could be it, irregular idling does point towards it. However there would be certain other factors too, like reduced mileage, power output reduction. If you're not facing this, then it seems unlikely though. However there is the smell of petrol, which indicates towards this (the logic being basically the mixture is rich, and there is unburnt fuel).
      I Would take it to an ASC, or a mechanic whom you know

        You may want to get the choke mechanism inspected for starters.

          i am unsure on what bike it is.. however going by general you posted as its a carbed bike. start from few thing.

          the AFR ( air fuel ratio) is definitely wrong. get it tuned properly else do yourself. check youtube videos.
          the float might be stuck inside post cleanup.
          also check for the accelerator cable slack.

            AFR is probably set too rich or choke cable is routed wrongly. Why have you waited 2 weeks? Go back to that mechanic and ask him to fix it. You have paid the money now its his responsibility to solve any problem that occurs.

              I dont take the bike out as often as I used to, so i cant say much about the mileage. Ill take her to the mechanic asap.

              I didnt take it too seriously since the bike has been running very smoothly. I just happened to post it here out of curiosity. Since everyone is saying I should get it checked, Ill do it asap.

                Happens to me too. Rpm falls quickly on revving but it gets slow between 1-2.2k and gets stuck at 2.2k sometimes. It is surely the choke cable.

                But you're smelling petrol, so might be a rich mix.
