Sleeve for Brake Drum.

    Sleeve for Brake Drum.

    Hello Everyone,
    One of my friend having Bajaj Platina 2006 Model with six spoke alloy wheel.
    Its brake drum weared unevenly due to unknown reasons due to this the brake liners also wears unevenly Half portion wears out and half portion is as new.
    Mechanic suggested to get the complete wheel changed.
    Isn't there any cheaper alternative like getting Ring / Sleeve shrink fitted in brake drum.
    Searched a lot but didn't found any proper solution so experts please throw some light on this.
    Hope the issue will be solved soon.

      Same with my discover 112 2006 model. Early Bajaj alloys are crap at best. I weld a bit of material on the brake cam on the side thats not touching the drum so that it works properly.
      Sleeving an alloy wheel is something i wont recommend. As the name suggests its an alloy and will distort at the first application of heat and force . This combined with the backward force created on the wheel when you brake may result in something bad.

        Never sleeve a drum. Bajaj alloys and drums are shit in quality.

        What you can do is polish the drum in lathe for trueness.

        Then use oversize brake shoe from ASK or MAKINO.

        Else get chetak brake shoe plate from spares shop

        Weld it on brake shoe base which rests on cam

            I have got fitted a Sleeve into rear brake brake of my YAMAHA Gladiator type rs FEB 210 MODEL after 76 K plus Km's running .The mag alloy wheel of Endurance make is costing Rs3700/- Brake shoe set 250 /- Total 3950 /- .Where as cost of Sleeve fitting 700 /- . Brake shoe set 250 /- Total 950 /- . Savings Rs 3000/- .
            Braking has improved a lot after the sleeve job done. The hub of mag wheel was taper to hold the mag wheel in jaw of lathe machine the turner done machining and created a step which looks odd.

              As with any kind of sleeving the quality of the liner matters. Have been sleeving old bike's brake drums. They hold. So it shd hold better on an alloy.

                  Brake sleeve material is cut to length seam less pipe of same material as of original Mag Wheel Sleeve. The Lathe operator does machining ( removal of material )on wheel drum to match size of OD of sleeve, Any run out non concentric of drum is made true, the sleeve is press fitted by hydraulic press into the drum. this type of fit is also done between T plate & T rod of front fork assembly. ID machining is done to match Brake shoe .
                  The material & skill is core of good workman ship of the Job, On my Gladi the Braking is improved after the Job , But during few meters of running there is a noise from the rear wheel brake drum which goes after first brake use The noise is not continuous but intermittent probably the liner touched the brake drum.
