  • [Help me] Front fender cracked

I am riding Star City +

About a month back I noticed a small crack in the front fender. I didn't drop the bike or rammed anywhere, but still cracked. I think my insurance doesn't cover this and the cost of new one is about 800/-.

Now the crack is getting bigger even with very little use. I don't think I would go for a brand new one. I think other options I have are,

    - I have seen few DIY videos of fixing cracked fender. Should I try that? or
    - Give the bike to local mechanic to fix it by plastic welding or with glue/bond thingy?

What would you suggest? If DIY, then what kinda glue/bond I should get for this job?

    Query Approved

I cracked my fender when my bike was a month old. I was told to replace it, since the crack would continue to grow. Being a miser, i just put some tape below the crack and fevi quick above the crack. It has been 7 years, the crack hasn't increased in size!!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Replace it if/when it starts rattling. Though if you want your ride to look preciously maintained, you can get a new one now.

An auto rammed me in 2010 causing a small crack plus a long scratch on the front fender and I left it then. It is still there and hasn't increased by even a small amount. No tape, nothing.

      P.S - try Araldite/Fevi Bond first.

Thanks guys. I will try DIY then.

Probably location of the crack making it grow, I guess.

Seems like I have to remove the front wheel to access mudguard bolt. Thought of removing and fix like in youtube videos.

There are various ways to do this.If you are really a DIY kinda guy then getting a fibre glass kit and doing it wud be the way to go.you will need space with good ventilation,to do this.you can also try araldite or cordobond with fibre glass tape from the underside.clean the surface thoroughly with a solvent and then with sopa water.then scratch up the surface to get a good adhesion.clean with water again.then apply the fibre glass tape soaked in cordobond or araldite. Whatever u decide to do, make sure you drill a neat round hole at the base of the crack to arrest it so that it does not extend further.

You can then fill up the crack from top with automotive putty and paint it

It is probably due to overtightening of the mudguard bolts from inside.

It's factory fitting. Never happened to do/undo front fender from the bike.

I had 3 choices in the local automobile spares shop.
                - Fevi kwick (quick?)
                - M Seal
                - Fevitite

Bought Fevitite as that's the one suggested better among the 3 by the shopkeeper.

I thought I have to remove the wheel to remove fender, but luckily there was a way.

Removed, washed, cleaned with rubbing alcohol, applied resin/hardener mix and taped. Now it's getting dried. Will let it dry overnight and assemble it later tomorrow.

Hope I did everything right and crack will stay glued

I am not sure about the inner side of the mudguard, but in the DIY procedure you followed, it might have been a worthy addition to fix a metallic washer from the innerside, to serve like a HoleGuard.

You mean for the bolt? They have provided one for the bolt and one for the mudguard. Here they are,

or Do you mean washer for the crack? I don't know how I can make one

Apart from that they have supplied a melt piece which goes with the mudguard/bolt. Here it is,

                    Before_____________________________________After

Despite it's not looking nice, for now I leave the tape stay there. I will remove it after few days...

I didn't dare to drill that crack stop hole and I don't have a tool either. If this didn't work, I will take it to the mechanic and ask him to drill one.

What tape have you used? That looks like some kind of insulation tape.

Yes, it's an insulation tape. That's all I have, so used it. I couldn't hold mudguard in the desired position for long, so put that tape

That will stretch before the crack cures.Anyways see what happens.

Yeah, you're right. Insulation tape will stretch, didn't strike my mind when I did. Crack isn't big and it's light weight ABS, hope it stayed together. I keep this in mind when I try next time.

I removed the plaster and saw, it's okay I think.

Hijacked your picture. The black ring is where I though a metal washer could go (si, to reinforce the hole and give it some crack resistance you know. You will have to compensate for any level change that this would add.
