  • Very low fuel efficiency Hero Achiever

    Help me out guys!

I purchased Hero Achiever i3S this January. The bike has been giving low mileage ever since. Initially, I thought, since the bike is new, it will take some time, as new engine generally takes some time to set-in. First servicing was done in March, at that time the odometer reading was 330kms. I changed the engine oil as well.
The mileage has not crossed 25kmpl.

I check the tire pressure once in a month. Wheel rotation is free at the rear, while at the front some contact is there between the disc and pads. Initially, the front wheel rotation was quite heavy, so I got that rectified at the service centre. The carburettor adjustment was done during the 1st servicing. The idle engine speed is around 1100 RPM. I even checked the spark plugs, the deposit was greyish brown colour, hence it's running on lean mixture.

I can't seem to find out where is the problem actually. I checked the petrol pump where I purchase fuel. I took a litre bottle to see if they give correct quantity. So, no problem with the fuel quantity as well.

As of now, the odometer reading is 560kms in around 110 days.

Is there anything that I'm missing?
And, what further step should I take to increase the efficiency.
I read about adjusting the idle speed and air-fuel mixture screws on the carburettor to increase the mileage. But I'm not confident, as I might end messing things up.
Should I contact the service centre?

    Thanks in advance!

First things first. How do you measure fuel efficiency. Considering that your usage is so little?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Reserve to reserve.
I fill 2 litres of petrol everytime and set the tripmeter to zero. It has not crossed 60 kms till now. I have been keeping check about the mileage since the day I purchased the bike.

If you have checked multiple times and it is the same then it is probably correct. But just to be sure, do the full tank to full tank method. 60 km is too little to get accurate readings.

Top up the tank, ride around 150 km and then top it up again. The amount of fuel that goes in will give you your fuel efficiency.

If that still shows a fuel efficiency of 25kmpl, then you are in trouble. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it!

Alright. Will try filling up full tank this time and update the results.
But what could be the probable causes, any guess? As it is already burning a hole in my pocket.
Hero says it's mileage is 50kmpl as per World Motorcycle Test Cycle standard. And here I'm getting half of the claimed figure.

This explains it! 1st service isn't a magic service. But 2000 odd km is a magic mark because the engine has presumably set in by then. 560 km isn't half of the running in period.
Also, please don't ride at 30 kmph in 4th to derive higher FE. You need to rev the engine (across the entire rev range) through all gears slowly.

              Agreed!
But 25 kmpl doesn't justify either. Had it been around 35-40kmpl, I would have considered your point wholeheartedly.

I don't think 50-60 km are enough (in city that too) to properly gauge FE. Fill full tank. Ride for few days/150-200 km. Fill to full again. Calculate the amount of fuel that went in. Repeat again. Take the average of the 2 readings. You'd get poor FE even if the AFR is set poorly. But on a new bike, carb better not be touched.

Well, there's no reason for me not to try out your suggestion. Will definitely get a full tank next time it hits reserve and update the results after driving for a while.

The Monk suggested the same method as well.

                  Thanks for helping me out.

                    Quick update:
Tried another fuel station. This time the FE came out to be 37kmpl.
It turns out a couple of riders complained the same about low FE when filling up from the same fuel station where I used to fuel up.
