  • Getting insurance when bike is still in previous owner's name?

Recently bought a second hand Honda CBR250R C-ABS. Bike has no insurance.
I'll be applying for transfer of ownership in a couple of weeks. And naturally without insurance I can't ride around legally.

I'm planning a trip to Kodaikanal this weekend, and having no insurance means I can't take the bike.

Is it possible for me to get insurance when the bike is still in the previous owner's name?

If not, can I get the previous owner (whom I know personally) to buy insurance in his name. And then get the insurance transferred to my name in two weeks when I start the transfer of ownership?

    Thanks in advance

    Cheers

    Query Approved

If you get a new insurance now, then you will have to get it transferred to your name later. Tedious.

Best is to be patient and don't ride your bike right now. Get the bike transferred and then get an insurance and ride wherever you want to then!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

To transfer ownership you have to submit valid insurance in rto, so i guess you have to get insurance on previous owner's name.

Is that first party insurance, or the govt mandated third party one?

Just checked with him, he said it is third party insurance, asked him to give more details.

Getting a 3rd party insurance is very easy. (Ex: National Insurance(Best) which is economical may be 1k-2k depending on model(CC) and year) . Even though the bike is in another persons name, you can get it done by mentioning his name and address. They will check the Chassis, Engine number and Original RC. If it is urgent, then it is the best way. I have done it for a friend. Works 100% and you can ride the bike tension free.

If it is not so urgent, please follow above members suggestions. Cheers

Re: Getting insurance when bike is still in previous owner's name?

Although it is late for you, but I am sure that there will be many other forum users who will be facing the same problem. So I am writing the answer for them.

As you must be knowing that in our country, Vehicle Insurance is mandatory as per MV Act, for ownership change endorsement in the used vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC) at the concerned RTO. Once you have transferred the ownership you can apply for insurance online/offline according to your convenience. I always apply for online insurance because it is hassle-free, quick to apply, claiming the services when required is also very easy. You don't need to visit their centers again and again.

If you are buying a second-hand vehicle, it is your duty to get the ownership transferred to your name. It is an integral part of the process of buying or selling a used vehicle. It is not only just about the insurance but you have to think about long terms consequences of having insurance on a different name. Let's say your bike was parked and got damaged by a third party. Now if you want to claim your bike's damages you have to knock the door of the previous owner again and again so that you don't have to pay for repairing cost.

So I would say it is worth to park your bike in the garage till you get ownership transferred to your name and get an insurance policy on your name. If you get a new insurance now, then you will have to get it transferred to your name later, which will take repetitive efforts from the sides. As some of the users have suggested some cheap tricks which I will not recommend you to go with.

I believe the answer I have written is helpful to users who had doubts on the topic. Feel free to ask anything on the same if you have any query.
