  • Block piston issue

    Hello folks,

I own a Pulsar 150 cc UGIII since last 2 yrs and 2 months now, have clocked approx 36,500 kms on her...
I was facing this problem from some time now that when I used to get my bike serviced and oil changed, I used to fill the oil till the exact upper mark or sometimes more than that too.The reason why I filled a little more was the oil level in my bike used to go down in about 10-15 days from the oil change.
It goes down to such an extent that when I go to top it up, I top it up by almost half a litre again.
Yesterday I showed my bike to a new mechanic and reported the same problem about oil decreasing every now and then.
He reved the bike and checked the exhaust... There was all black fumes from the exhaust...
And then he said, "block piston gaya hai " ....
    I was shocked till death...
He said its uselesss topping up oil again as it will again decrease ... Approx exp he quoted was rs 2000.
I am shocked as to how and why block pisteon has gone.. Any inputs will really be appreciated.

It could be the rings..or you might have streaks along the cylinder wall.. causes could be many.. anything leading to some fine dirt/material inside the engine and as the piston runs up and down streaks form as it rubs this against the wall.. and then these streaks act like little valleys.. has happened on quite a few bajaj bikes.. if there are streaks on the block then you'll have to change the block-piston..

Dear Omkar, if the bike is consuming up the engine oil( as in your case the fume from the exhaust is black) there could be multiple reason.
the most common and obvious reason is, that the piston, rings and the cylinder lining has worn away, so as to say, that there is a considerable gap between the piston rings and the walls of the cylinder which in turn is letting the engine oil from beneath the piston to mix up with the air fuel mixture in the cylinder and getting consumed up with each stroke. the gap can either be due to..... oil pressure ring on the piston has given way, or the piston on the whole has worn out or the cylinder too might have worn out. this is a regular wear and tear of any engine.
also, before you start about changing the piston or the block, please ensure that the head and the valves and guides are not the main culprit, else, there can be some leakage from the head , valves and the guides too.

make sure you take the vehicle to a good mechanic who inturn would check the main cause and would rectify accordingly.
Its not about the BHP or the CC, its about one common religion called Biking!!!

              But y..............

In a block piston, rings going kaput issue your bike would emit "white-ish" smoke from the exhaust at normal regular rpms.....
              Check out for that
If that is true , you will have to get your block piston and piston rings changed

They would cost you something in the region of 2500 bucks....

Sorry mate, wont be able to meet cuz I stay at Mumbai..
Yes I wont do it through a mechanic or something but would go to a service station. But to be frank with you, the mechanics at service centre are really very lazy and are unwilling to solve your problem.. As far as my experience goes with the Bajaj Authorised service center mechanics, they will just say " yeh pulsar main normal hai " and will run away from the work...
I might go to Reddy at Goregoan, will get the bike checked from him first and see what he has to say. I ll get the work from him probably (people who know him, please provide me your inputs whether he will do a good job or Sai service Borivali)
Or probably I will go to the same mechanic who identified this problem in my bike cuz I found him quite well verse with his job.My old mechanics (Bajaj Suroday authorised service stn) were never able to tell me the cause as to why the oil level kept dipping.

But is it normal that they block piston has worn out in 36k kms .. I havent heard about any of such problem from my frnds of my bro.
I hope there is nothing wrong from my part or my carelesness that has led to such a problem in my bike ???

What are thr pros and cons of re boring the piston ?

What would be better - Buying a new block piston or re boring ?
I am as it is craving for more power , so how much power increase (in terms of CC as well as bhp) can I expect after re boring ?
Also the mech told me that even if I re bore or put new block piston, I ll have to change the clutch plates too as the compression would increase... But I have changed clutch plates just 5-6 k kms

Just check with the Bajaj people once; normally you have 5 years unlimited warranty on engine.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

2 years 30K warranty is on parts like the exhaust etc. The Engine block and gear box has a different warranty. Which is why I said, just check with the Bajaj people once before spending the money.

Though I dont intend to start up a debate or a war on the reliability or ruggedness of Bajaj, but my Pulsar 2006 model gave up after just 17000 kms and mind you, that was despite the fact that I have been known in my group/circle to be a bit more careful towards the maintainence.
anyways, engines and Humans..... are reliable but then again very unpredictable....

also, as for the warranty...mate, most of the manufacturers will be glad to offer you the warranty but that's applicable if and only if you carry out all the scheduled service(free and paid Both) from the agency on time, you miss one and you loose out on the warranty too.

                            cheers

AFAIK, the UG3 s (150 n 180 twins) have got only 2 years warranty overall. There was an option for an extra 2 years of warranty though on paying a premium

It s only that the 200's and 220's get this 5 year warranty on critical engine components.
