  • Engine and mileage problem Unicorn 160

My unicorn 160 has run approx. 55000 km. It has some srious problem regarding mileage. Sometimes it gives approx 50-54 kmpl and other times it gives as low as 38-40 kmpl. I travel at same speed(50-55 kmph) on the same stretch of road at the same time daily. Daily commute is about 60 km. What could be the problem?
Also the engine sounds like that of an old 100cc bike. Its not refined and smooth. Seeing its done almost 60k kms, should i do any work on the engine or leave it be? If yes, what works should be done on it and approximately how much would it cost me?
    Thanks in advance....

I don't see anything significantly wrong with the mileage figures you claimed. After all its a 160cc engine.
Remember, try keeping your engine in the top gear as long as possible for best mileage, but if its feels stressed or you need to slow down, do downshift to lower gears. Avoid jerky shifts.
Try keeping throttle to the minimum. You should be under 20-25% throttle for most of your ride. You can try marking it too on your accelerator, but keep eyes on the road...

As for engine smoothness, its normally a good practice to use semi-synthetic or mineral oils in the starting of the engine life, and fully synthetic oils towards the mid and end...

So, I suggest you use a recommended grade, fully synthetic oil from a reputed brand like Motul, etc. This might help with the smoothness after service.

Another thing that you try is to use a fuel additive from a reputed brand. That might help with combustion and internal cleanup.

Best leave it as it is, as our mechanics are not always good enough to bring a bike to its past condition after repair work/ overhaul. Its a gamble in my opinion.

Can you suggest a good fs oil for the engine? Also what are fuel additives?
