Honda unicorn 160cc

  • Honda unicorn 160cc

    I have a honda unicorn 160cc bike, bike suddenly stops sometime while slowing down on speed brakers or some bends, then it never starts again, the kicker goes freely and unable to start the bike. (10 minutes frequent kicking with full throttle release makes the bikes start)
    This problem repeated almost four times, this problem started in my new bike since 4000km.
    Honda service center does my bike service and I service my bike every 4000km.
    Engine oil is changed, air filter, spark plug changed as per schedule as advised by service center.
    As per Honda service center, they told it is some problem with Valve clearance.
    They have adjusted the valve clearance but the problem looks like repeating again.
    I checked with Mechanic outside, they told it is petrol rich problem(They have started the bike with full throttle by cranking self start continuously).
    I am really worried of this problem. Could you please advise me what can I do to avoid this problem

      I am not an expert, but I had similar problems in my old pulsar 180 dtsi. The culprit was the fuel tank drain hole which used to get clogged easily thus creating a vacuum inside the fuel tank which didn't allow petrol to flow down the carb easily.

      It's just a wild guess, but you could check your fuel tank drain hole first. Tell any roadside mechanic to check whether it's clogged up or not, or do it yourself with a syringe.

        Hi ar.asin
        if this is a fuel tank breahing hole problem as said by arya. Then just open the fuel tank lid while you face this problem in the next time. Then you will be able to start the bike again. If it is starting with this method then clean the breathing hole with pressurised air. I had this same issue with my yamaha szr. And fixed using this method.

        But one of my friend had this same issue which was not related with fuel tank. His mechanic told him that, it was a stucked valve problem. Which is common in unicorn. So that you should not slow your suddenly without downshifting gears. Mechanic told him to push the bike in gears and check the kicker to ensure it is having the noramal preassure then start the bike for an immediate fix.

          Hi, ar.asin. I do have same problem with my unicorn 160. Even my mechanic told me that it is stucked valve problem. I face this issue 5 to 6 times in 3.5 years and my odo is 29k. Whenever it happens mechanic told me to push start bike in 3rd gear.

            Stucked valve was the problem told to me when I checked with mechanic....
            Not sure why this valve gets stuck suddenly on slowing down the bike....

              One more problem...Kick start gets stuck sometime...is this common or any idea why it happens?

                I've no idea about kick getting stuck. I experienced only compression less kick starter problem.

                  Nothing to worry, its a common problem in Unicorn 150 and 160.
                  Usually occurs due to carburetor not tuned properly (Usually mechanic leans it to give maximum mileage, which is a bad practice)
                  When bike runs in lean condition especially above 60kmph valves will burn off due to excessive heat caused due to lean condition.

                  How to fix it?
                  1. First and most importantly, get the tuning done properly (Usually the carburetor tuning is 2 full turns out from fully tight position of air screw)
                  2. Need to reseat valves/replace valves depending on the damage. Usually only valve reseat is required, can cost around 300rs for reseat and 350rs for labour

                    Honda has just screwed my life! Everyday i hear, new problems about 160cc honda engines, the whatsapp groups are also filled with problems in hornet . I have observed a thing, that people here in xbhp conceals the truth about Japanese brands and in whatsapp discussions it's another story! Because of all these reasons buyers like me, are facing problems.

                      I can understand your pain. I was once in your position before I took the pain to learn how bike works and how to sort out issues without anyone's help.
                      Now after 12 years of my experience with my Honda bike and seeing others who owns Honda bikes, there is one thing that makes sense to me.

                      Some bikes are tuned perfectly from factory/service center (Such bikes are always running in top notch condition even if the owner doesn't properly maintain it.
                      I think this depends directly on the competency of the technicians handling the bike.

                      After I learned about my carburetor, I fixed all my issues myself. Till now, my bike never gave me any headache only oil change alone and that too I do it myself
                      My Unicorn clocked 165000+ km in my bike, still it rides like a dream. Battery was replaced 5 times in all these 12 years.

                      So it really depends on your luck. I have seen same with Hero, Yamaha and Suzuki.
                      All engine problems starts with tuning issues and ends with the proper tuning.

                            Initially when you attempt to fix bike yourself it might become worse than before, which indicates that we never understood about its working.
                            At that point, step back and learn more about it then you will understand what has gone wrong

                            Very simple way to do carburetor tuning is by following service manual method and going to pollution testing center while doing carburetor tuning to record CO and CO2 emissions.

                            Couple of lessons I learned the hard way:
                            1. Always remember what you removed and from where and never misplace even a screw that you took out
                            2. Always be gentle will all nuts, bolts and screws as many of the threads can easily damage even by slightly over tightening
                            3. Have service manual with you always when you are doing complicated works like removing engine apart and take ample amount of pictures before and after removing, organizing nuts, bolts and tools in proper order will make your life easier and makes repairing much more enjoyable.
                            4. Never do any shortcut works, always take plenty of time and be thorough with your work, doing this will exceed your quality of work than service center technicians, never hesitate to remove any extra things that are preventing proper access even though it looks difficult (Going slow and steady, taking enough breaks in between and enjoying what you are doing will make servicing your bike a pleasure)
                            5. Never hesitate to buy all proper tools like socket sets of high quality (you can never go wrong with Taparia brand) even though expensive (This will be a permanent asset and you will be glad you bought those)

                            It will takes some time to be good at repairing bikes, but over time you can become the best mechanic of your own bike and solve any kind of problem on your own.
