  • (Need Advise) How should I manage my Chain where I commute 50-60kms daily?

    FZ-S V2 2017
    ODO: 11500+
Since a month I have got a job where I have to commute minimum 60 kms (round trip) daily.

Plus going to other places in return for other work adds 10-15 kms on alternate days.

Now I see my Chain looks dry after every 5-6 days. If I touch it, sides of chain is little oily ( blackish) while other part is dry.

Charges for chain wash - lube spray at ASC is 150₹

How should I maintain my chain further?

Looking forward for advise from community.

Use 140 grade gear oil to lube and kerosene to clean the chain. This will save both your time and money.

          Thanks for replying.
I shall do it manually with 140 grade gear oil and kerosene.

Lubricate it with 90+ grade oil every weekend after wiping off first with a clean cloth. Every alternate weekend, use diesel/WD40 for thorough cleaning. Get that chain cleaner brush available on Amazon from Autofy or others.

For thorough cleaning, first use brush or cloth to remove dirt and then when it is relatively clean, out WD 40 or Diesel and clean thoroughly with brush. Then wipe and let it dry off for 30-60 mins. Then apply the oil/chain spray.

Motorcycle is good with Chain guard for Indian atmosphere..
Should have bought Motorcycle with chain guard if you are supposed to ride 60 plus km per day as per engineering view point to lessen the care
Riding 60 /80 km per day during rainy season, chain-sprocket kit tends to loosen and get ready to spending more money for care..

Rain water+ road filled water bath vanishes the chain lube and chain tends to be loosen...
Naked chain concept is not so good esp for those who are commuting for daily purpose.
Manufacturers are not giving chain guard to reduce cost, even though they knew they are selling motorcycles in India where 3 to 4 months are rainy season, and almost many roads filled with water....

Stock chain last for 15k km to 30k km , then onward OEM/company replacement spare chain-sprocket kit last for 10k to 20k km generally...

              (1) For cleaning use diesel , then lube+ grease mixture..
              (2) Do not go to road side mechanic for lube they tend to Pour all of Oil from oil can to your chain.. too much oil is also not good for chain..
Even service station guys also tends to pour too much oil in chains.. tell them specifically.....
              (3) During rainy season use chain lube+ grease mixture(50:50 ratio) to avoid water contact...
              (4) For Lubing chain use Grease+oil mixture and apply these mixture and wipe with Damp cloth on chain. Never pour too much oil with can ,
Use damp cloth to apply/wipe chain with lube mixture on chain always.....

Water is enemy for chain and its lube.
Grease is enemy for water so good protection from water damage so use grease mixture lube time to time during rainy season
