  • How to improve the reliability on my Bull Std 350

In two days I'm going to be a third owner of 98 Bullet Std and I've been researching a lot to know the pros and cons of a Bullet Std. Now I've a few questions to improve the reliability of the bike, since my main purpose of buying the bike is touring. And himalayas are on the top of my list!

    1. From the RE website, I gather that there is a 'CB Point Conversion Kit' which replaces the mechanical parts in the CB point ignition system with electronics so that the high voltage is produced even with a low battery situation to ignite the spark easily. Is this synonymous to the TCI system? And what difference does it make to the CDI system? Is it maintenance free? I need it mainly to overcome wet and cold starting situations. Someone shed some light on the cost factor too.

    2. I read the new AC-DC alternator in the Electras are much better than the Stds. If i should change over to this, what are the components i need to change in my Std bullet? The main objective is to fit a high power light and a highway horn, and I want a better electrical system to support the same.

    3. I heard the Std batteries are 5 amp and the Electras come with 14 amp. Can i use the 14 amp batteries on my Std Bullet? What are the components i need to change for the same? Alternators, Voltage regulators, Rectifiers, Chargers and what more? Can somesay say the cost of these components?

    4. I wish to cruise between 90-100 kmph in highways (its a Std 350 CI) and I read somewhere that the tradtional oil pumps in Std Bulls wont supply enough oil in such sustained speeds. Should i go for a high pressure oil pump? Is it easily available?

    5. Can I use tuff-up tubes on spoke wheels? Are the tuff ups available for the 19" rims? Or should i down size to 18"? What are the pros and cons of down-sizing?

I've few more doubts on handlebars, paint schemes, teflon coats etc.. and I reserve those queries for the future. Hope these queries and the answers are benefitial to other bulleteers too! Thanks a ton!

      Hey buddy,

First of all congrats & welcome aboard the thumper family.

As for the queries, I will try to answer them according to the sequence.

      1. I would say that the CB point replacement kit is more like the CDI setup along with the freedon to adjust the timing (as you will still be able to turn the base plate). TCI setup is different from a CDI setup, & for the detailed differences you can google it up, but for a start, TCI setup would generate a higher voltage spark but for a shorter duration as compared to the CDI setup. Also the TCI setup is sealed in an epoxy based compound, cannot be opened (but am not sure on this).

Also, you are looking at this as a way out of wet starting, well I hope you are not planning to go scuba diving on the Bullet (hehe), just kidding. But on a serious note, if you are looking at the aspect of the unit getting wet, I would say stick with the CB points, as they are easier to dry off & you will be much happier with them. Also for cold starts, if you have a healthy battery, & a proper circuit, even the CB points work fine.

      2. Get the wiring & other components like the rectifier changed to the specifications of the Electra.

      3. The older Std 350 Bullets had 5 Amp batteries, but not now, its been long since even the Stds had higher amperage batteries. Keep it the same way or else change what is written in point 2.

      4. Bullets have been around for a long time now, & yes even though higher output oil pumps would help they are not a neccessity & the old horse would run fine even without them. Although, remember that since the pistons would be bigger, you will have to get the timing cover lathed at the place where the oil pump works. Also please share the information here in case you know of a source for this part apart from hitchcoks.

      5. I think you can, although others may comment about this in detail.

      Take care.

      Happy thumping,
      Prakhar

        Engine noise!

        Hey blackfire,

Thanks for the detailed reply. I was away to procure the bike and jus got back home with a new problem. I had plans of driving back home (400 kms) and that's the stupid decision i took being new to bullets. I drove between 70-80 kmph and at about 100 kms distance covered, the engine started making serious noises. Kind of tak tak sound in very rythm with the thump. Oil leaks were serious and the engine was fuming too badly. I gave her some rest and she started in the first kick after half an hour though the sound perisisted. I sent her back home though cargo later.

On hearing the sound, the mechanic said the floating bushes and the engine bearing are gone. And he charges 5000 just to make things ok or for 8000 he can do a complete reconditioning. Is he charging fairly? I have some doubts if the sound is from the timing chain though. But I'm no expert to have opinions now!

I live in a small town and the nearest authorized service centre in 100kms away. Should i take my bike there? Or should i hunt for a good mechanic locally?

If the floating bushes are gone, I guess the culprit is the lack of enough oil supply (i checked and topped up oil level before starting the ride) from the pump. I should be doing something about this since my main objective of getting her is touring. I heard the new stds come with a better oil pump. Is that true and can that be fitted into mine?

        Please help dear experts!
