  • Hill Rides with pillion on GS150R

    Hello to all of you,

I am a proud owner of a third hand GS150R from Cochin, Kerala. I am sedate rider and usually ride at 3000 to 4500 rpm, never exceeding 60 km/h in the city. Once or twice a year, I go with my wife and little kid to Munnar or Idukki. While climbing ghats and inclines, I get knocking sounds in the 2nd gear. So I shift to 1st, but I can see other 100cc bikes like Passion and Scooters easily overtaking me on the same incline.

Is it my riding or my bike that is to be blamed? I have learned to do minor service like oil change and chain lube, so before a ride I usually do a checkup. The maximum I have pushed is till 8000 rpm in the 1st gear, but I am unable to push further.

Will it harm my bike if I go above 8000 rpm? How do 100cc bikes overtake me even though they are less powerful? I am a skinny guy and so is my wife and kid. Our combined weight would be less than 140 kg.

Also, sometimes I have felt as the bike is getting out of breath. It's usually on climbing higher altitudes. I can feel my ear popping. On descending the issue fades away. Has anyone else faced the same issue on GS150R or other 150cc bikes?

Hi RAIS. I live in perumbavoor and usually visit munnar, idukki and vagamon. Most carburetted bikes feel a little breathless and loose some power due to slight lack of oxygen in these high-range areas. I am unable to use 4th gear in my passion pro in munnar and vagamon.

The bikes used in the high-range areas are tuned accordingly for that altitude. Your bike is tuned for vypin which is at sea level.

But a 150cc like gs150r should not feel too powerless even in high range areas. You said you are the third owner. Check the top speed and acceleration of the bike. It should easily cross 100kmph. If not then clean and retune the carburettor and change the clutch plates if they are worn out.

You can get more help in the gs150r ownership thread.

      Yours truly,
      Motoman
