  • Buying a used bike without any documents

I have been dreaming of getting an RX 100 since a long time. But the prices and schedule stopped. Last week I found a person who was willing to sell his RX 100 at a throwaway price. The bike's condition is pretty average. Engine is good and all. Body needs a bit of work. But the real catch is that he doesn't have any document for the bike. NONE. No number plate even.

So, how do I go about this? Is there any process I can get the bike registered or get documents for the bike? I wouldn't bat an eye when he said no documents but that being an RX 100 and me craving for one, I am not able to let go off the deal.

    Please help me. TIA

One word answer: Don't Even think.

It is a classic scam nowadays for selling vintage bikes. It is very good of you that you resisted your temptation to get in contact with the person. if you want to know about this scam ,just do a google search you will come across a thread about this on popular car forum whose name is similar to this. It is illegal to post the direct links to that forum here. so i am giving you the hints.

Wild guesses mat include that the bike may be stolen from some one, may be one of those those are confiscated by Police or RTO and kept in the backyard. Anything can go wrong. Better be safe than be sorry.

Not worth time or money, unless you would like it only to be displayed at home. Most are stolen and usually out of state cases, this so called theft also involves damaged parts, breaking the key lock shell, odo tampering and so on. Take a look at any chor-bazaar in cities like Hyd, Bom, Blr, there are plenty of them with fake tyres, parts, damaged, no papers etc of which many a times morons find the motorcycle and file a case on the buyer saying BUYER "stole" thier bike. So what you get is a not vintage, but a can of worms!

I have friend who owns the same bike with same kind story, he got it from a very famous local mechanic in Mumbai who works on old Yezdi, RD, RX bikes.

He was told by the mechanic that the bike was put together from various parts the mechanic had collected from so many bikes that he had serviced in many years, by using the parts owners who used to leave their old parts behind. He would be giving 0 documents or number plate.

My friend inspite of knowing the story got the bike because it was at throw away price like you said and he loves RX and 2 strokes, he got it because he uses it only in his remote village in Maharashtra when he goes their once in a month, where nearest town is 30kms and uses it just get groceries, fuel, to drop of cow milk to Dairy pick up point and dropping people to main bus stop etc etc for stuff like that without any docs, number or insurance. He can never ride it beyond that town to main road or main city where the bike will be caught and scrapped.

As long as your usage is something like that or you want to modify it for some track or off-road or stunt event, it's pretty useless piece of metal if you want to get it to use it within the city. You cannot get it registered no matter what you try.
