  • help me in some service and technical issues

i have a RTR done around 8800Kms . Previous service was at 5000 and at 7000 i did a oil and filter change without service .Bike goes atleast till 120 on speedo now
now going for reg. service and will stay there whole time to see what all they do

1)what are symptoms of loose tappets and how do they become loose ?where are they located so i can make sure they atleast attempt to set them .are tappets set on cold engine or hot?
2)what's valve clearence and when's it to be done ? symptoms?where are they ?
3)how is CO settings done ?[its mentioned in manual] what CO value is good ?is CO mentioned on my pollution certificate?

Also i've noticed when svc start servicing bikes they rev the bikes very hard and till high Rpms at neutral for 3-6 minutes. It may be to get oil warm to drain it . is it bad to engine to rev it so hard and till high Rpms at neutral ?

Anything else i should look out for ? i dont trust service people

        1) & 2) is more or less the same thing. Loose tappets result in a typical kind of chatter from the engine. They can come loose with use... but after a long time. If they get loose soon, then it means the job hasn't been done right by the mechanic. And this is one area where most of them are known to goof up. The setting is to be done when the engine is totally cold.

Can't help you with the CO thing.

Do not let them rev the engine like that... esp. on a cold engine. I have no idea why they do that. A short quick burst is all that is required to glean what is possible from the firing and engine noise. Oil should be drained when its fairly hot. But revving the bike like that in neutral is not the way to do it.

Tappets come loose with either very rough use or very long use. Since you have the rtr i doubt that it'll come loose of rough use. also, since you own a TVS 4 stroke some mechanical clatter is expected so dont get too hyped up when you hear clattering. As Mr. Raccoon said if it gets loose too soon then the job was not done properly.

If you ride hard then I suggest leaving the tappets slightly loose so that you dont blow them 1000 KMs.

About CO , well TVS gave u a silencer and other gizmos to control that so dont worry about it now. u can start worrying some years later.

SERVICE CENTER PEOPLE ARE CRAZY AND NOT VERY CONSIOUS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S HAPPINESS.

They just like the revving sound of engine I guess. Dont trust them blindly. Believe me, I lost my First bike because of idiots like those.

Why keep them loose? You probably mean keeping the clearance a bit higher? I'd suggest keeping it at what TVS recommends... unless you have a real good reason to do otherwise.

engine idle noise is very different when tappits are loose also there will be no pickup in your bike.. tappets become loose with the engine running over time slowly.. its normal.. located inside the engine ..remove top cover over the engine to set them.. they are set in cool engine..
valve clearance is the gap between the valve stem and rocker arm(valve lifter) to be maintained to ensure that during the engine cycle inlet and outlet valve is completely closed.
CO setting is done when your bike is actually polluting .. this happens when the engine is not in a good condition.. CO value is there on the puc certificate..

service center guys rev the engine hard to check the condition of bike's engine..not for heating the oil .. you already go to service center riding the bike hehe and the engine is hot enogh if there is something wrong with the engine parts, on high revs it will make cranking noise.. yes you should avoid revving engine in neutral..

As an idea how long well set tappets are good for, someone I know has done about 45 k on his Unicorn. The tappets have never been adjusted according to him. And his bike is used in all kinds of conditions - dense city traffic, touring, etc. He never gives his bike to mechs... does all the basic things himself.

Just compare this with how long things last after the wonderful service centre mechs lay their hands on it.
