  • Help pls: My Pulsar 180 has some issues

    Dear xbhpians,
    Good day

I'm a newly registered member in this forum..

I have an issue with my Pulsar 180CC DTSi 2006 model, bought it from my friend's colleague..

It's been almost 10days I'm using this bike and loving it..

After I bought, I changed the timing chain, spark plugs(default), engine oil, clutch plates, accelerator cable and tappets adjusted accordingly.

My mech also said that he will clean the carburetor(ucal-Mikuni BS29) and handover the bike.. in the process, mechanic showed me that the AF screw is jammed/struck and not able to do any sort of tuning..he tried his best but couldnt unscrew it.

He said that it can be removed by taking it to lathe work..I said ok..after sometime he called back and said that he is fitting the carburetor and the AF screw was removed but could not use it..

Once i reached the mech, I saw that the AF screw was not at all perfect. The AF screw he has inserted in the hole went deep inside, I asked him right away that is it perfect with the screw, he said yes sir, I bought a new screw for the same..I was totally lost with that work.

And ofcourse after the carburetor was installed the bike doesnt start at all..it was just idling but if throttle is opened it shuts off..he tried many times, but of no use..The Carburetor went for a toss, I felt really sad at that moment, he was also confused about the scenario..he managed to get a used UCAL BS29 carburetor from other pulsar..

He cleaned and installed it on my bike, and luckily the engine starts and rews freely..just found that there was slight moisture(fuel leak) on and below the fuel drain screw..again something to think of.

Mechanic said that he will tighten it and that won't be a problem..and this carburetor doesn't even has the reed switch.

Anyways I thought it won't be a problem and used it for a day and found that the RPM isn't stable, even though the bike is very hot after a top speed test in highway..the RPM needle decreases gradually after few seconds on idle and engine shuts off..

Went to the mech again, he said there is no such problem and again tweaked the carb settings and said it should run fine now..

Again same problem persists, and it struggles to reach 100KMPh and becomes harsh and hard, the RPM needle flickers like anything at 9000RPM..
And again I'm not satisfied with it..

Have to mention that initial pickup is great and bike runs smooth..

Yes I know this is a long story for better information..

Can anyone pls suggest me on this?

Check your jets in the carburetor and also install new AF screw and RPM screw. It will solve your problem

Thanks Niranjan, will take my bike to the mechanic in sometime and tell him the same, also noticed that gears becoming harder after the engine gets hot..maybe related to clutch..coz the bike is also not moving though the throttle is given full in 4th gear and struggles to go beyond 50kmph..
Will update after the work is done..

Adjustment can be done for hard gear shifting. On clutch hub(after opening clutch case), you will see adjustment screw, tell the mechanic about this he will adjust. Make sure he adjusts properly else your clutch plates will get worn out quickly.

Got the bike from mechanic, he said that he couldn't locate a new AF screw and RPM screw anywhere nearby, and he again fixed another used carburetor (ucal mikuni BS26)..I dont know from where he bought it..the RPM needle doesn't flicker and looks stable..though I feel the ride quality is not smooth as it used to be earlier..
And top speed achieved at 95kmph around 8.500RPM I think.. bike rews freely upto 60-70 kmph speeds and gradually picks up and touches close to 100kmph on a stretch..

I don't know if a 13yr old can do 100+ or I need to check with a good mechanic..

I made up my mind that if at all I feel that the comfort smooth ride like earlier is missing, then will get a new carb installed for sure..

The gear shifts are also fine as of now..he had done some adjustments..

The difficult part is that I'm not able to find a mikuni bs29 the standard carb which comes with the Pulsar 180 Dtsi..

Enquiried with bajaj service centre and they say that the bs29carb is not available and they are installing ucal Bs26 for pulsar 180cc older models also..

Check it with local mechanic shops and if possible you may find it online too.

                      Update.
After 2days of use or ride with the mikuni ucal BS26 carb on my pulsar 180DTSI,
The bike runs good, no rpm flickering or doesnt shut down engine slowly when in idle..
But lost its power I feel, initial pick seems to be ok, but mid and topend is not great at all..and bike is not smooth as it was earlier with original carburetor..
So again living with the same problem..

Is the carburetor which you are using is for Bajaj pulsar 180 or anyother?
