  • Strange jarring noise from engine

I have a Pulsar 150 Neon, 1384km on odo, 2 services done, currently running on Shell AX5 20W50 Mineral Oil.

Since first service, have been hearing "jarring" noise above 4000 RPM in 4th gear. The noise is not constant but periodical and increases in frequency with increase in RPM within the 4th gear. ( like hmmmmm........hmmmmm.....HMMMMMM..HMMMMMMM)

Once I upshift to 5th, the noise recedes and then comes back really faintly at around 4800 RPM (though its a lot more "normal" feeling this time)

Now this is my first bike (alteast a Pulsar) so I don't know if its actually how the bike sounds or something indeed is wrong. The ASC mechanics just laugh me off on this.

Any advice on this will be highly appreciated.

Since you haven't completed your break-in period, its quitecommon to hear such sounds. Do check it with service center guys.

First go to the Bajaj Showroom, take a test ride of a new Pulsar 150 and observe if it makes same noise post 4000 RPM. Assuming that you had a Hero Honda, Yamaha or Honda bike earlier, I'd like to add that Bajaj's DTS-i or Triple Spark engines sound (not exhaust note) different which is more evident while engine breaking.

Also, you mentioned about bubbles in the engine oil so I'd suggest that you drain that Shell Oil and try a different brand like Motul or Valvoline. Though Shell is a reputed brand, it's possible that you may have got a counterfeit or a very old (check MFR date) stock.

Thanks for the reply. Its hard to get a test ride and achieve 40kmph+ in any way because
                1) Traffic will never allow.
2)The guy sitting behind you will make you make a U-turn back to showroom within 200 metres (experience after 6 test rides)

Even if you say you'll pay for the petrol, its just hard here in India to get a "proper" test ride. The sound is like what you hear from from old ceiling or exhaust fans when you run them after a long time after winters. Its more of a whirring sound I guess, don't know the proper term.

I was riding a Suzuki Zeus 125 before, which had a measly 7.68 BHP and struggled to climb a flyover with a pillion. Though I never had any issue with weird sounds from its engine. It has done 65K+ kms and still works.

I think you might be right about me getting a counterfeit but my mechanic its normal, its just that I have a window and I'm seeing something I haven't seen in past. Oil PKG date is May 2019. I can't get 20W50 Mineral from any of the other brands (Valvoline is non existent in the market rn) and even the wholesalers of Karol Bagh have just synthetic oils of this grade. I used Motul 3000 15W50 before Shell and immediately took it out after 34km as bike seemed to run heavier and slower than having a healthy pillion aboard. I was eager to put in a Servo oil and increase oil change frequency till bike completes 2500kms but now they only make 20W40 for bikes and the 20W50 that they do have is for CNG engines.

I think its a manufacturing defect with my bike as in no way I think this specific type of sound being there and limited to a single gear.

Might be but its not convincing still. Though I have 5 year warranty but I don't ride much and I'm pretty sure problems may arise exactly after my warranty.
P.S. I wrote that I checked with the ASC guys in the last line. :P
