  • Transfer of ownership

    Location TN 01(Chennai, Tamilnadu)

My Gixxer SF is currently in my father's name and I want to get it changed to my name. I am the only person who uses this bike and cops hellbent on bribes are asking me for an NOC which needs to be on a stamp paper and is valid only for so many months...(not really sure about the validity, one of the cops told me this)

According to the internet, my father can either "sell" the bike to me, or gift it to me.

Can someone enlighten me on either of these processes?

What happens to the insurance?(valid till November 2020) The vehicle currently has 0% NCB, if the ownership has changed, will I be able to get NCB during the renewal?

And how do I intimate to Suzuki that the ownership has changed?

(My father's name keeps popping up on the bills)

By the transfer of ownership from him to me, will the resale value of the vehicle be hit, since it becomes a third hand sale now?(when I actually sell the vehicle)

Also can I do this on my own? Or should I get the services of a broker?

I'm a college student, I don't mind spending 2-3 days at the RTO, but if it ends in me hiring a broker, I would preferably do it through him itself in the first place.

        Re: Transfer of ownership

You only need an NOC if you are transferring the bike between cities or states. If you are staying in the same area as your RTO - TN-01, you don't need to transfer the bike to your name as long as you have all the required documents with you - RC Book, Insurance, PUC and Driver's licence. Cops cannot bother you if you have all these even if they are in your father's name.

If you do transfer the bike to yourself, resale will take a hit since the number of owner's have increased. I don't see the logic in this however as it's all due to the mindset of people. The bike's condition should be the only determining factor for resale value but hey what can we do...

Transferring the insurance is a simple process, simply send copy of old RC, new RC and the insurance copy by email to the insurer (process might change for different insurance companies). They may or may not charge you for that and they'll issue an NOC or addendum (forgot what it's called), that piece of document will just state that the owner's name has changed from xxx to yyy. When you renew, you'll be eligible for same % of NCB.

You dont need to intimate Suzuki for this, When you give the bike for service, you can just inform them and they'll usually ask your name when you give the bike for servicing/repairs.

The process itself is quite straightforward, but it'll take time and multiple trips to the RTO unless you have all the documents exactly as they want them and you make sure moons and stars are aligned as per their expectations and arrive at an auspicious time... Brokers will charge anywhere from 500-1000 rs for this process but life is a whole lot easier that way.
